ive heard it sounds like marbles, but how loud? ive got my TA set to 15* and i noticed a new sound, kinda like a soft high pitched, mechanical whirring. almost like sucking air, but not quite. i just hope im not pinging.

you'd know if it was pinging, you can feel it too. Did it never do it until you did the T/A? I would back the timing off 1 degree at a time and see if it goes away and try a higher octane too to see if it goes away.

how loud is pinging? the noise i heard was VERY quiet. i had to strain to here it. also, could a TA change the tone of my exhaust at all? it seems like it was deeper, and it seemd like i heard a lot more sounds coming from under the hood, but nothing really sounded bad to me

Yea, if anyone knows of a video / audio file withing pinging I know I'd appreciate it. I have a slight noise (have always had it) but not sure if that's part of the exhaust leak. It's most evident when you're in a higher gear going slower under load... let's say going up hill in 4th gear at 40mph ...

Drive by a wall, building or whatever will reflect the sound of your car - this will help you hear your car. You'll only hear pinging under load. If in doubt dial it back and see if it goes away...

It sounds like someone is tapping on your engine block with a small hammer.

I wish there was a gadget out there that would detect this. Like a "ping detector".

Is the tapping noise i hear while idle next to a building pinging? It doesnt do it under load unless my exhaust covers it up. My car and my friends 00 GT does the ticking, we can notice it most at drive through windows, i think mines louder than his is.

It sounds like if you had marbles in a tin can and shook it around!

Just try using a higher octane and see if it goes away. If you did nothing but change the exhaust, it should not be pinging. I sound like you are hearing the exhaust leak, this can sound a lot like a knock. I doubt you have pinging if you haven't changed any timing or added any boost. But if you do then the higher octane would stop the pinging.

The pinging is preignition. When your piston comes up for the compression storke and the spark plug ignites the gas, you want a nice even burn across the top of the piston. pinging, detonation, pre-ignition are all the same and what happens is that you create to much compression and the increase in compression raises the temperature of the gas enough to ignite it w/out the spark plug and you get an explosion in the cylinder (this is how a diesel works). By raising the octane, decreasing the A/F raitio, or by pulling timing away, you can prevent this. Do one or a combination. And someone mentioned before about wanting a sensor to detect this, well, there is one on our cars (at least on the newer ones), it is called a knock sensor. If this sensor senses knock, which it will long before you will be able to hear it, it pulls timing. The probleme is that it can only pull so much timing.

This is only in the DOHC engines, according to the Haynes Manual for the 99+ Mustangs.

On my 2001 GT, it is knock sensor equipped. When I installed my Kenne Bell supercharger if it had to have one, otherwise you have to get one. I am not sure on the years though.
