Installing Intake '67 289

Ok, need some help here. This will be the second time I have removed the intake to stop the end seals from leaking oil. At first it was rear seal, so I removed the intake and fixed it, now its the front seal. I put permatex on the cork gaskets, but they moved when I installed the intake. What should I use? I have heard about people not even using the cork gaskets and just running a 1/4" bead of RTV. Should I do this instead?

A nice big thick bead of high temp silicone, discard the cork, clean up what squishes out and you are done.

That works.
I have also seen that a lot of the new fel-pro baskets now come with rubber permadry type end seals that have lips along the sides that slip down over the block to prevent squeezing out, I've had good luck with year also.

i use a 3/8" bead of black rtv silicon to replace the end gaskets, and i carry that up to the coolant ports on the intake gaskets themselves. i also use a modified torque pattern and torque setting. i first torque the corner bolts in a criss cross pattern to 30ft/lbs, then o use the standard inside out ford pattern. i also retorque the bolts after a couple of heat cycles. i have yet to have a leak since going to that procedure.

Another vote for sealant instead of end gaskets. I have never had one leak that way (I use black RTV) and never had one seal with the gaskets, regardless of manufacturer

Thanks guys, I got it put the intake in and it doesn't leak. I put permatex on the bottom of the cork gaskets, then installed them. After 30 minutes the permatex hardened up a bit and prevented the gaskets from moving, then I put permatex on the top of the gasket. So far, no leaks.

That's pretty much how I do it too. Something that I have found to really help is putting cut-off bolts in the corner holes to keep the intake from moving around while the other bolts are lightly snugged down. That's after waiting for the RTV to tack up, of course.

I use 7/16" head bolts with the heads cut off to guide transmissions onto the bellhousing and guide the bell onto the block, too.
