intake installed, now I have detonation???

Well I finished installing my Tmoss ported stock lower intake on saturday and the car feels quite a bit stronger. I put everything back together on sat and drove the car sat night with seemingly no problems. Then yesterday I went to adjust the timing and that's when my problems started. After a few test runs I had to leave the timing at 8* because that is as high as I could set it without detonation at the top of the RPM range. :bang: Now I feel as though there may be something wrong with either the distibutor or the harmonic balancer. Because when I put the timing light to the HB with the timing spout still plugged IN the timing jumps all over the place. and everytime the timing suddenly drops the cars idle drops and seems as though it is going to die. Now I run 91 all the time (best i can get in my area) and have not had problems with detonation before. Is it possible I missed something while installing the intake? Vac line or something? Would something that small cause these problems? Also is it possible I put the dist in wrong? If so would the car even run right? The wierdest part is that it ran great sat without setting the timing when I set the dist by only using the reference marks I had made before i removed it. Any ideas are appreciated. Oh and I do have a 190 lph fp to install next wkend incase the prob is not enough fuel. :shrug:

the timing with the spout in is going to jump all over the place. that the computer changing timing like 4 times every second (just guessing about the amount). you gotta unplug it then do timing. no other way. if the car feels stronger then thats good so there isnt a lack of power. do the timing with the spout out and find out what it says then
 
I did the timing with the spout out that is how I set it to 8*. I just wasnt sure if it was supposed to jump like that with the spout in so Im glad that isnt an issue. But it is still pining above 4500 with the timing set at 8* (spout out :) ). Could my stock Fuel Pump be the problem? With my UD pullies is it possible the FP isnt getting enough power to pump at its full potential? Im at a loss cause it hasnt pinged like this before.
 
well with all that i have in my car, i still have my stock fuel pump and i can run 87 octane in my car on 16* of timing and have no pinging. i usually run her at 14* at 87 so i guess im lucky. ill try to brainstorm for a few min to see if i can think of anything but i might not be any help cause im braindead today.

i worked on a car for a friend to get rid of pinging, first of all i drove it with premium still detonated.....then we seafoamed it....still did it...all kinds of other stuff including cleaning the MAF.....nothing worked until we changed that sensor.

maybe possibly the manifold gaskets are crap sorry didn't have time to read the whole story so this might sound dumb but also I have heard of people needing to add extra bolts that weren't there before just thinking that possibly the manifold is leaking causing a lean condition...again sorry didn't have time to read everything...
 
You just installed an intake manifold, and the detonation appeared? Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Get a vacuum gauge, and see what you get. I bet $20 that your vacuum will bounce around all over the place, or be too low.

All good suggestions. Before you go and replace the pump, put your AFPR on there and try giving the car some more fuel. Actually, the EEC should start adding pulse width to the injectors for more fuel if the car is running lean consistantly.
 
Ud pulley's have nothing to do with the fp. As long as your voltage is in the normal range your fine. But yea get a vaccum gauge and check that and while your at it get some carb cleaner too. That will help you find the leak if you have one. Also, check to make sure the plastic part of the dist. is not moving freely from the rest of the housing. If it is (as what happend to mine), just a little tug from a plug wire will change your timing. Also, if it seems to be that and you want an MSD, I have one and I can say its very good quality, but I dont think you will get any kind of performance gain from it vs. a stock replacement. So thats your call.
 
Thanks everybody. At least it sounds like I might be on the right track. I dont think the gaskets are bad because I used the fel pro ones Tmoss recommended and took the time to line them up right. Vacum line is a possibility and I will need to check into that. I am more leaning towards a lack of fuel being the problem.

Tmoss, have you experienced anything like this before when adding your ported lowers to cars with stock fuel systems?The more I thought about it, it seems like I might not have the fuel to support the extra air coming in. What do you think?

Don't worry about fuel, the EEC will add the needed fuel by increasing injector pulse width and the stock system is up to the task. And adjustable fuel pressure regulator helps with tuning later. I do hope you disconnected your battery neg for about 20 minutes to erase your old fuel trim values in the EEC - if not, do it. Most problems are traced back to a vacuum leak. Be sure to re-torque the lower bolts at least once (I do it twice) after a few days. Be sure you have a new gasket between the upper-lower and only torque those to about 12 ft-lbs. The gasket set says you don't have to retorque as they are "permatorque", but I beg to differ. Check all your vacuum lines real good - especially the MAP sensor line and make SURE it's on it's own individual dedicated line to theintake manifold.
 
Well the battery was disconnected during the entire install and then reconnected once I was finished. I guess I will just trace back over everything and make sure my Vac lines are connected and then retorque the lower. I hope its as simple as a vacum leak now I just need to track it down.
