Intake Question

Should I get a Typhoon, GT-40, or Eddy intake manifold, with my setup?

Also next week im getting my trans rebuilt and upgraded with a 3000rpm stall Torque Converter. It will also have hardened parts in it with a shift kit too.

Then 4:10 gears might be coming in after that, since that is what I heard is best for an AODE.

yeah I am going to most likely do a cam and heads down the line, just as soon as I get the money. My main question though is the Typhoon a legit intake manifold and do people have problems with it, since I don't really hear about it that often and it is pretty cheap?

It's cheap all right - they have significant issues with inconsistant runner cross sections in the runners. They need some work to be as good as a GT40/Cobra/Explorer or a Performer. The Performer holds a slight edge (~10cfm)in flow over the GT40 style intakes but it does not add up to significant HP when used on the same engine.

Oh, that itnake comparison is taken from a 1996 Super Ford test on the Explorer - it is not correct for that intake as later testing has proven it wrong.

I got a RPM which is what the Typhoon was copied from.

Several peeps run that intake on this forum.

You can see more details in my sig with links.

Basically, that intake just shifts the band up a few rpm over the regular upper

unless you are going with more cubes or a power adder later, i would recommend the performer and then the gt40 as a second choice. the typhoon is known to have many casting imperfections. it is basically a cheap knock off of the performer rpm. the intake does work, but as with most other things, you get what you pay for.

No significant differences in any of the 3 GT40 Style intakes - they have all been shown to flow about the smae and make within a couple of HP of each other across the rpm band.........The Expolorer can be found on ebay going for $150-200 on a regular basis. I bought mine for $200 with the 65mm tB, the Bosch design III injectors.

What kind of flow rates can you get out of a gt-40 ported lower?

Higher than what the chart says - it flows the same as the GT40/Cobra.

What the lower flows by itself is not a good indicator of total flow because it is short and when ported, the flow increase is dramatic. A caveat there is if you are going to use the lower on a KB blower or with a Box style upper - then the flow of just the lower is important. You can get them to flow 280-300+cfm after porting and some welding for the upper end flow range. When used with a GT40 style upper, the lower stops being the restriction and the whole intake flow is optimized for cross section and length - the length then becomes the limiting factor for that equalized/improved cross section.
