Ive been looking at a cobra intake from this cat on craigslist. Price is right, 275$. For upper and lower. Then there is also a gt40 setup on ebay for like 260$.
My concern is one better than the other? I swear i read somewhere they are basically the same.
Im just ready to ditch this stock setup. But im not wanting to make a bad decision either.

Is the cobra intake you're looking at off a 94/95? Does it have the built in elbow for the throttle body? If so I'd go that route for sure. If it's an explorer/cobra intake it's a toss up really. Either way you'll need the elbow adapter and last I priced one they were around $100.
BEND

NO BENDYou want the one w the bend.

Good to know lx. Ill have to double check . the guy on Craig's list has no pics. Ill ask him. Im not trying to be cheap, but im also trying to factor in some better heads. Which puts me in the dilema of just wanting to buy a top end kit. Im in no hurry to do this project. Im looking at at least a year, year and a half project on the build up. Thankfully there is no cosmetics that need done. I can, focus everything on motor and suspension. I appreciate the heads up on the info about getting a 94/95 setup. My stang is a 95, last of the titans.
My goal is right around 450 hp.
Been wanting to supercharge, but am kinda looking at nitrous too. The wet kit seems like the way to go.
Just want to have some fun with this car. Like everyone else. Thanks again 90lx

Last of the titans indeed. Look at your stock manifold where the throttle body connects. The 94/95 cobra has the same bend. If you don't go w a 94-95 cobra intake no matter what intake you use you'll have to get an elbow adapter.

One more thing: are you sure the intakes you're looking at aren't both explorer intakes and being referred to as "gt40" and "cobra"? Those are about the going rates for 5.0 explorer upper and lower on eBay etc these days. People usually ask more for oem 94/95 cobra intakes, they think they're rare I guess and people tend to ask a butt-load more for the oem tubular gt40 intake that came on the fox cobras. Either way all of the intakes mentioned will perform about the same. The 94/95 cobra intake would be the most convenient, and the tubular would be the most iconic. As far as performance goes; it's a toss up between them all whether it came off an explorer or an oem cobra. But I'd bet my left ear that the sellers you're looking at are selling explorer intakes.

They are explorer...
Dont know if i will do non egr though, or keep egr.
Ive seen mixed reviews on that issue.
Trying to get all my ducks in a row while im pouring my slab in the back yard to accommodate my build.
My main issue is the mileage is unknown on my car. Odometer quit at 82000. There was a 2yr gap from when i bought it, and ive probably put myself like 30000 on it. So im thinking about pulling the motor and handing it over to a machine shop.
Decisions to make are mounting.
Am looking to do it right the first time, no matter cost or time.

A rebuild is probably for the best if you're looking to keep the car awhile. I think I'd keep egr if you can. Once upon a time I was searching for a used gt40 intake for my 95. All I could really find were explorer versions and by the time I would have purchased the intake and the required elbow adapter I would have been spending nearly $400 for a used explorer intake. I couldn't justify that. I read some good things about Tom Moss porting stock lower intakes so I contacted him and he claimed that having him port the stock lower intake (leaving the upper stock) it would flow about the same as a stock gt40 intake and it would cost around $200. So I figured since I'd "only" be in at $200 and I wouldn't have to spend the money on the elbow adapter and everything would bolt back on like stock (not having to worry about egr etc) that I'd give it a try. After a stock rebuild w a mild cam and spring upgrade it made 205 rwhp. After having the lower intake ported it made 223 rwhp. I added a vortech kit and it now makes 332. All that being said I don't think the intake can support much more than what I'm making now nor would a stock explorer or cobra gt40. If I ever get a set of better flowing cylinder heads it's time for a better flowing intake.
@revhead347 What are some issues that one might run into when choosing heads for the 94/95's since they have that funky egr tube? Any?

Dont know of any issue with the egr when changing heads. Good question though. I've read about tmoss, and he seems, like he knows what he is doing.
I plan on keeping this car forever. I may as well buy a topend kit and be done with it. They are a little expensive, but its a one shot kinda deal.
There are just so many avenues to go with this car its crazy.
I do know that the time to start this project is only about two months away. So ive got to get my goals laid out on paper and in order.
Really glad i joined this forum too. Alot of you guys have given a tremendous amount of insight as to what to do and not to do.
Do you have different gears in you car? They seem like a pain in the ass to change...

If I could do it all over again I would've bought a topend kit when I had the motor rebuilt, poor homework on my part. My car had the stock 2.73 gears and a few years ago I had a shop put 3.73's the install looked to be above my head. I think the labor was like $400 if I remember right. I have a t5 and I'm not a big fan of the 3.73's they're a little low for my liking. 1st gear is worthless and when on the highway in 5th it feels like it needs a 6th gear. Maybe if it was a drag only car they'd be ok but they're irritating on the street.

One more thing: When you start researching parts you'll need to compliment your topend kit and asking questions about mass air sensors and throttle bodies the majority of the fox guys will say you need to buy a larger calibrated maf (most recommend a 75mm) and a larger throttlebody. But the thing about that is they're relating to their peweny 58 mm where us 94/95 guys came stock with a 70 mm maf. As far as calibrating the maf to the injector size that can and will be handled via dyno tune. The stock 94/95 units can support more power than given credit for as long as you don't get too crazy in the horsepower dept.

Thats the same answer everyone else gives on the 3.73s. Im gonna have 3.55 or 3.31 installed on mine. They seem like a better choice for what i want to do imo.
Which topend kit would you choose? The one from late model restoration (sve) seems like a good buy. Price is decent too.
Have you done any suspension upgrades? Braking upgrades? I know i will have to do something, so as not to twist the frame up i guess. Thoughts?
