Hey I've had a "mechanic install upper and lower intake on my 89 5.0 and I noticed he sealed this off with rtv. This is the second attempt and I feel there is going to be a 3rd go at it.. what are the potential problems if any with this being gone around completely with rtv? Thanks in advance

This is the back of the block under the lower intake. I'm unsure of what this is.. he told me it was a frost plug but I am hesitant to take his word on it as he missed so many important steps the first time and I had to supervise the second time around

Yes but not on the back china wall only rtv

Somebody else help me out here.

It's early, and that image was taken with a potato but... That looks like the PCV port to me. There should a screen and a gasket in the hole and then a PCV valve inside of the gasket. I've seen them blocked off before but that is [not] recommended (by me, anyway).


RTV only on the china wall is how I do mine as well. I let the RTV set up for a while before installing the intake. Cork gaskets suck. Permatex Black but some others are suitable as well.

Looks like you’re right @Noobz347. We don’t know what intake, etc the PO is running, so can’t tell if blocking that makes sense. But, if it’s a stock setup, that’s a bozo no no.

That is a plug for an oil galley.
It is not used once the block was finished being machined.
Sometimes that plug can seep oil.
I see no reason why you should not seal it with a RTV sealer.
It just insures that you don't have a potential leak down the road.

+1 on the oil galley plug, no need to put sealer on the perimeter of the plug, but you can, no harm, no foul.

prime the engine with a priming tool and make sure the plug is not leaking.
