I've been searching around and want to get the basic bolt-ons out of the way this summer and save more extensive upgrade for the future. I'm confused about intake systems (such as the C&L) which come with a 73 or 76 mm MAF. What exactly is the purpose of the MAF? Further, would it be okay to get the MAC CAI, get a Pro-M MAF (76mm?) and a 65mm throttle body? If someone could clarify some of this basic stuff it would greatly be appreciated.

(I know the topic has been beaten, but I searched and didn't come up with very much help)

The stock MAF and TB become restrictive once aftermarket heads/cam/intake are added. Also, when running bigger injectors, you need a MAF calibrated for those injectors.

CAI's are a waste of money IMO; more for looks than power. And as far as upgrading the MAF and TB, I'd wait until you are ready to change your h/c/i. Remember that you will probably want to upgrade your fuel pump as well, and possibley add an adjustable regulator.

Agreed - the stock air cleaner with a K&N and the air silencer removed provides everything you need until you start adding much more power.

BTW Pro-M is out of business, but there is another company that is taking over where they left off (forget their name right now - do a search of the forums).

If you're on a budget, talk to Thumper460 and TMOSS about their ported stock heads and lower intake respectively. Then you will be much happier with MAFs and TBs when you get them.
