Interior paint question

Ok, I stripped my quarter panels of their old paint, and for the most part its clean, there is only a small layer of red left here and there, not really any more way to get it off without scraping with a metal sharp edge.
I was able to put primer on one of em, and then I tried to put a coat of the interior lacquer paint that Mustangsunlimited sells. However, when I sprayed it, it didn't want to stay on... it would all run down or would stay the primer color... What should I do? I've gone through an entire can on one quarter panel and it swtill has primer spots and tuns of runs...

As i was mentally going over the process again, I remembered that the only difference between the method I used to paint the primer and the red coat was that for the primer I laid it down flat, and for the red coat it was standing against a wall.
Could that make a difference? could it be that it was a bad can? that I didn't shake it enough?

Does this can of interior paint have the word "Rainbow" on it? I used this stuff and it's junk. Just throw it away.

I used another brand, called "TrimTech," that seems to work better. I used very little of it, so I can't say for sure. I got it from Paul at Mustang Magic in Fremont California.

Yes it does have rainbow on it. Is there anything at a local hardware shop i can pick up?

Hey Suki,

I used Krylon brand paint, I found it at PepBoys couldn't find it at the Lowes or Depot. I had great results with the product and my interior looks like new. It goes on thin so you have to put 3 or 4 coats on. The harderst thing for you is going to be matching the paint to your existing red interior, but maybe they sell a paint that matches.

Thanks, I'll look into it, yah that's the reason why i bought it from mustangs plus instead of buying it myself, was having it match... I'm quite disappointed with the product It is really bad. I've used a few Krylon products, and I've been pleased with their products.

I sprayed the air cleaner with a paint, I put two coats of primer and a coat of blue, anything else I should put on? a clear? it is engine blue paint so its built for heat, but should i use the clear?

Another question: If I lightly color sand it will it get rid of the drip marks?

That looks like Rainbow alright. Two more coats -- 3 cans -- and you can call it good.

Oh, and about the color matching -- that was another bit of fun I had with Rainbow and my '65 white-with-black-appointments, that every can of the Rainbow white had a slightly different tint. The corners of my fastback area, where four or five panels and trims strips come together, has four or five different colors. Thank you, Rainbow! Thank you Mustangs Plus!

What do you think about wet sanding with a high grit? cause it is very rough, and I'd like to clean it up a bit. I also would like to go down to Lowes and get a Krylon, I'll paint a small piece of metal for reference. The only reason why I decided to continue with that original 1/4 panel was cause I really didn't want to strip it again.

I think some laquer thinner on a towel will take all that Rainbow paint off and it won't harm the fiberglass.

I had my cladding pieces carefully blasted by Paul at Mustang Magic. You must be very careful with blasting or sanding because if you penetrate the gel coat you'll hit the glass fiber and the surface will get all fuzzy. Just try the laquer thinner in a low spot, where the seat cushion will cover any disaster, and see how it goes.

Do you guys think that rollers would be better? or is spray the best way to go? in case Krylon or another company has the color in rollers?
Should I go with lacquer again?

Well, I went to Lowes, and they didn't have a matching red in the spray version but they had it in the brush on version, I got a brush and a roller and the paint, i'll see where it goes.

Here ya go, This is the new red I got, its a tad bit lighter in red, and a whole bit shinier, I still would like to be able ot get rid of one or two roller marks but they're most probably gonna be covered by the seat cushion. Anyone know how to get rid of roller marks?

The grain came out perfectly, and this is a picture of it not fully curing yet, it has been 3 hrs but when i picked it up from the side i left a finger mark in the paint =\. I think i'll wet sand it, (i got 600 grit sand paper) and i'll put on another coat and perhaps a clear coat on top. Then i'll move onto the door panels and the dash.

What do you guys think?

k... i painted the other quarter panel (the one i first sprayed with rainbow) and it came out pretty good,

Now the first panel (the first roller one) I decided to color sand it a little and put a second coat on it... Bad idea... it took a bad turn Now i gotta strip the paint off of that and redo the paint. Live and Learn i guess.

I taped off the driver side door, and i started stripping the paint on that. I'll try to do the same with the dash soon. You guys think i should stick to the rollers?

Honestly, the other thread you had posted lists the right way to refinish the metal quarters. Just make sure you don't buy the Rainbow paint next time and you'll be all set. (The lacquer interior paint I bought from NPD was not Rainbow.)
