So..........extremely long story, hopefully I can make sense. I bought a 88 5.0 over a year a go and have been fighting a no start issue ever since.

Background:
New to 5.0 stuff, learning as I go. Driving the car home after buying it, it got warm, but the radiator did not boil over. After that I decided to replace the coolant system. Replaced the water pump, radiator, fan assembly, thermostat, electric fan controller, and hoses. No more getting hot. Started to drive the car and it would die ~2-3 miles after driving. It would cool down and restart. I pulled the MSD box, plugged in the stock ignition, the car started. 1.) Based on that I sent the MSD box back for a rebuild by MSD. Get the box back, drive the car ~50 miles total, car begins to die again. 2.) Rebuild the MSD billet distributor PIP and TFI and replace the coil. Car runs a bit, maybe drive it 50 miles total. Then it starts to die again. 3.) Buy a new MSD distributor. Drive the car like 100 miles total, starts to die again. 4.) Buy a new Summit distributor and now a new / same issue.

Current:
The car will crank, and randomly start or not. I've driven it a few miles without issue. Then another time I started it after sitting over night, pulled it out of the garage, and the car died and would not start. I had pulled off the EGR stuff the day before, so I wiggled all the wires around the EGR, (TPS) the car started and drove a few miles. For the hell of it I replaced the ignition switch, the stocker looked absolutely fine. I also replaced the TPS sensor and set it to 0.93 Vdc.

I tried to start the car the other day, after sitting over night. Crank, no start. I pulled apart the Salt and Pepper Shakers and checked for power, had power for the injectors.

Today I began the Crank But No Start Check List. Attempt to start the car, no start. Jumpered the car at the starter solenoid, held the coil wire to the block, had spark. Autometer Fuel PSI gauge showed fuel psi. Pull the injector harness and install a noid light and test to see if the injectors were firing. Jumper the car, light flashes, car starts. Shut it off ~5 times and it started and idled without issue for about 15 min.

So......................

Now what to do?? I don't trust the car enough at the moment to drive it any distance. After today, having spark, I thought I may have another PIP issue. But I'm not sure. And really, 3-4 new PIPs all going bad? Or is there really another on going intermittent issue. Do I buy a new distributor, replace the EEC, replace the coolant sensor? Could the coolant sensor stop the car from starting one minute and let it run a block the other minute?

Check the red/blue wire on the TFI while cranking with the key. It should show battery voltage. If it does not, you have wiring problems with the crank circuit.

Typical start circuit...

Notice the read/blue wire from the starter also feeds the TFI. It tells the TFI the engine is cranking and to change the way it manages the spark timing. This gives more spark when the engine cranks

See the following website for some help from Tmoss (diagram designer) & Stang&2Birds (website host) for help on 88-95 wiring http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/tech/engine/ Everyone should bookmark this site.

That sucks, man. I dont have an answer for ya, but feelin your pain. I went thru an exhaustive and expensive problem with an intermittent miss... hope your fix comes around quicker and cheaper.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to disable the car from starting while cranking it over to test the TFI wire?

Pull the coil wire out of the distributor and ground it somewhere.

You have fuel pressure, what about fuel flow?

I should add.............the car has a Vortech S-Trim. The previous owner wasn't 100% certain on the type of fuel pump installed. So I purchased a new 255 HP pump, dropped the tank and installed it.

Today I attempted to start the car. Initial ~ 10 second crank, no start. So I thought Ok, I can start testing. 2nd attempt to start the car, fired right up. Shut it off, started it 2 or 3 more times without issue. But I know, based on the past, if I attempt to drive the car, it may die in a block, a mile, or not at all.
