well im wondering how street friendly roughly 450hp would be ...could i jump in and drive anywhere not meaning a dd car but if i wanted to take it on a weekend trip would it be a bad idea?

my question in because im doing a 408w build for my 94 and it was all fine because what ever hp it was or whatever it would see very minimal road use because i would have the 93 to do whatever cruising /weekend needs i had but im wanting to get rid of the 93 sooo that would leave me with just the 94 so now that i have began building a motor i dont want to finish it if i will be a pain to street drive...what are your thoughts?

It really depends on how you build it.

If you are building a car that revs to 7800 to make power it probably won't be.
If you are building a car that revs idle - 5500 or 6000 and makes power there you will be fine.

I will assume you're talking 450rwhp. I have a streetable n/a 347 that makes around 430rwhp. The 408 should be able to make the 450 and still be easily as streetable as my 347. If you have a good tune there shouldn't be any problems keeping it on the street. I have problems in the hot summer keeping it cool if I try and run my AC in town. I don't drive it on long trips because that's just not what it's for. I drive it about an hour each way to see friends all the time, but that's about as far as I take it. It's not going to be like driving a mildly built car and it's going to have it's little issues but it's just a matter of weather or not you're willing to put up with a happy medium of both worlds of n/a high hp and smooth running daily driver.

from what i've seen, it depends on how it's built.

a friend has a 600+rwhp terminator that is very streetable. ride is very smooth--you can't tell he has that much power unless he gets on it a little. driving around town, cruising, it is a very comfortable car. of course, it's got a whipple, so i don't know how different an n/a car would be.

then again, another buddy w/ a 400rwhp Mach1 is also very smooth, and that's cause he has 4.30's out back.

whatever that's worth to you...

For NA applications.

MY rule of Thumb is approx 1 HP per cubic inch gives very nice street performance, that can be daily driven with little or no issues, a good idle and high vaccuum.

Everybody has a opinion on streetable.

Forced induction is altogether different.

Rule is 1rwhp per c.i. is streetable and realistic.

If kck6894 is making a streetable 430rwhp on a 347 and says it is streetable, I would like to know his definition of streetable and what the build is.. So if you match that hois same build with your 408, you would be a LOT more power than that 347. ..more like 505+rwhp.

Incorrect.

I'm well over 1hp/per cubic inch and im perfectly streetable. Just because you're afraid to do it doesn't mean others are.

It very rarely see's the track, its a pump gas STREET car

Our Turbo 95 last made 640 RWHP, and with the new housing will be over 700 - it's driven daily, gets over 20 MPG and drives almost like stock. My Turbo Gen 1 Lightning makes over 500 and drives like stock.

Giant cams, huge heads and intakes are waht cut down driveability - so do poor tunes.

:Word: And yes the 1rwhp per c.i. rule is a general thumb rule and n/a not power adder.

p.s.I love those gen1 lightenings. Once when I had my 90 gt was the first time I ever saw one. He came up behind me. I laughed..haha a truck thinks he can stay with me. I noticed some fog lights on it and I wasn't used to seeing fogs on a truck..Well, I mashed it at the light and that truck wasn't too far behind...enough to make me wonder what the heck, lol!!!

Then the weird thing was on the straights I lost him and on the turns he caught me! (This was all done on a closed course with traffic lights)
