Is a cougar motor any good??

I have a friend with a '88 cougar engine 5.0 sitting in his shop, Its been there for 2 years and he said when it was in his car it screamed. The motor is complete from intake to oil pan. So do you think its worth the $200 asking price??

Oh and whats the difference between the cougar and mustang 5.0's??

Why the HO Mustang 5.0--what's the difference?
There are quite a few differences between our stock motors and the HO motor. Below are the major differences. NOTE: 1993-95 5.0's have hypereutectic pistons from the factory and were rated at 205-215 hp using Ford's revised HP rating system. The output is still approximately the same as the pre-1993 HO engines. In short, the HO has the good stuff. Not that the stock non-HO motor is bad; it's just not as good as the HO engine.

I also believe the non HO motors including cougars have 14lb injecters and a less aggressive cam profile.. not 100%on the cam comment but I am sure on the injecters or somethign close to 14's.

Well I dont plan on using this motor as it sits...Im planning on completely tearing it down to bare block, have it cleaned, bored and honed, and then build it up with performance parts from there...So is it worth it???

And are did these come from the factory with roller cam and lifters???

i doubt it has a roller cam. u would have to buy a retro fit roller cam and lifter setup.

Ford started using roller cams in their regular base 5.0L car engines in 1986.

This 88`5.0L Cougar engine has a roller cam,but it`s a very lame grind compared to the 5.0L Mustang HO cams.
