something like that shouldnt affect your torque a whole lot. i figure somewhere between 0-5lbs of torque.

Ok how do you get the silencers out of the 99+ cars?

I can figure it out, but i just want an idea of what i'm getting into.

Maybe after dinner i'll go yank it out.

Oh and I just wanted to add, that on any vehicle, K&N is the *****!

Ive had one on my previous two cars and not that it will give you any serious power, but you do save money in the long run and I noticed that it would rev a littlebit more freely and get a little better gas millage.

Took me 10 mins,

1. Open hood
2. Locate the silencer by following the intake
3. Remove the screw that hold the intake manifold in place and undue it.
4. Unclip the filter housing for easier accesability
5. Remove the silencer/snorkle that is made of rubber going into the fender wall.
6. Reclip filter housing
7. Re-Screw the bolt from 3.

HAVE FUN!!

PS: Seing as how your stock, come back and let us know how it feels and sounds + wether you notice the engine rev freely. I want this to be documented for future refrence.

I have come to realise the people that preach "I dont notice a diffrence" or "it affects my low end and its a trade for top end" ALL HAVE EXHAUST MODS.

So IMHO if you dont have exhaust mods, removing the silencer/snorkle is worth while, if you do have exhaust mods it depends on what you want.

Oh thats great. Stangnet, crap-tech reaches another all time low. Not only has the silencer-or-not thing been debated over and over again (please use the search function), but now we have this wonderful piece of crap deduction... Based on a bunch of people talking about how a couple of Hp/tq changed based on their SOTP meters, we have learned that whether or not you have exhaust mods determines whether removing the silencer helps or not. Oh lord.

Dude your arguing over a air silencer / snorkle removal. I gave him my oppinion and me posting your sig (with exhaust work) just helps my theory along.

BTW: I just checked out your site and would like to ask why your running an open air intake ? Shouldnt you be on my side here ?

Sweet ride BTW Dude,

I'm not going to argue with ya, No I havent been hear long but seriously, maybee I'll stop posting and go somewhere else. You dont like the tech stuff going on ? Well look, my previous car had alot more support from memebers and I'm just trying to help a fellow Stang owner out.

As for the "search" function, it seriously blows. You have to be a regular to know what your looking for, people use diffrent terms left and right. Maybee if the powers that be would "sticky" comon threads that have been comming up/discussed then people such as yourself with almost 2k in posts wouldnt get upset at a conversation/suggestions (what are forums for?) about topics or oppinions that come up on a regular basis.

Anyway man, I'm going to think twice before giving my opinion here, looks like you got what you wanted.

Look, you seem like a fair enough guy. All I want is some decent tech talk around here. Whether or not to have a silencer as measured by your ass on the seat, is just so ridiculous to me. Let alone judging how exhausts mods affect the decision from such information.

I run an open K&N, no MAF screen. Why? No dyno testing here. The parts were cheap and I just wanted to open things up on the intake. Big tube, big filter, no box. Based on what I've read in the past its not worth losing sleep over, and some of the best NA racers have used the same set-up sucessfully (e.g. Bill Putnam running mid 12s with bolt ons). I'm more worried about stiffening the chassis of my car and switching this god damn tranny for TKO right now.

Well, just for the hell of it. i went for a drive first. I got on the car hard chirping gears and all that.

Then i yanked the silencer out in 5 mins (real easy to do)

Then i went for another drive. I noticed the car sounded like it had a deeper growl to it. I didn't notice really if it revved faster and was faster at all. It was a cool, dry night so the car was haulin' ass in general. I don't really think you'll notice 260HP vs. 262 HP.

But it's out, and i'll leave it out.

As for the whole silencer debate in general. Who cares really. Let those interested post freely. Who care's if it's not real tech. I'm not in the mood to stroll over to the 5.0 forums and research my upcoming blown 331 setup right now. i wanna **** with my new GT even if it's trivial stuff.

Seems like a good place to post this:

I haven't been a member here for long, and I'm all stock with no mods yet. In joining this forum, I've learned more about tech stuff than in past YEARS of being a car buff wannabe. This is a GREAT place for a newbie like me to learn about how to make a REAL performance 'Stang.

So if you're having a bad hair day, take it out on your dog and visit the sites you've already deemed more worthy of your time. This forum serves an awesome purpose, even if only for novices such as myself. The help I get from more experienced and helpful tech geeks is invaluable to me.

Or, if flaming someone on a newbie thread keeps you from climbing a tower with a high-powered rifle, by all means please continue with your catharsis...

Wouldnt you rather the information you base your decisions on to be correct or have some kind of sound basis!? If youd rather mod your car based on garbage info like "removing the silencer is good only if you havent modified your exhaust" without more experienced members speaking up, then go ahead. Next thing you know youll have a tornado and 2 electric superchargers because some retard said they work and the others didnt speak up.

I stated the obvious - that the comments were retarded, and then I have a bunch of newbs yelling. Talk BS tech if you like and believe any old crap you read, but that is why so many good stangers have left stangnet 4.6

I'm done.

Oh god! listen man, there are a lot of people on this forum that only wanna hear about superchargers and pi headswaps. to them something as small as an air filter is stupid...dont listen to them if its important to you, its worth asking.
As for the filter, buy it! worth every penny. The air silencer....trash it. some people will argue that it revs faster without it, others say you loose a bit of low end tq...who cares!! bottom line, either gain/loss is microscopic, you wont ever notice a difference. the truth is that the intake sounds 100000 times better without the thing. It makes the car sound meaner and at WOT it makes the car a lot louder.
The Cold Air Intake....from someone that bought a K&N FIPKII (suposed to get the biggest gains in a GT) dont waste your money. i noticed no difference over stock with a K&N filter. if you get it, get it only for the "bling" factor.
God! some of you "know it all" people piss me off! Youre on this forum so that people who dont share your knowledge can pick your brain and hopefully learn something from you....if you have nothing productive to say STFU!!!! this is a forum....Im still pretty new at this but i had the impression that this forums were for people to ask questions, share openions and experiences. He asked a fair and simple question theres no need for you guys to complicate things.

I agree. that was the main thing i noticed. The car sounded like it had a meaner deeper growl to it. Not much, but a subtle change. I have a stock exhaust so it's not that loud to begin with.

Any other gains? I don't know, but i like the extra noise

So you're gonna leave it off? I think I'll keep mine on. Like you, I only plan to do minor upgrades (shifter, exhaust, K&N filter), so it will be interesting to compare/contrast.

As for basing my decisions on accurate data, there are ways of posting contrary opinions without being disrespectful. And as for newbs yelling, I count only one flaming post and it's Bond... James Bond...

I have the new G-tech, and everytime I try a mod, I do a 1/4 test before and after. To see if it helped or hinderd, then record my findings in a log book.
Here is what I discovered:
Stock 98' GT:
1/4.......15.159@93.95
330ft.....6.494
1/8........9.865@74.6
0-60......7.309
60ft time...2.21
Snorkle removed:
1/4........15.203@93.16
330ft......6.491
1/8.........9.869
0-60.......7.311
60ft time...2.2
I then put the snorkle back in and did three more runs. Removed it again, and once again had a slight loss.[does sound cool though] Notice the 60ft times are very close.I then installed Mac cold air intake and this made a much more noticable gain.
Hope this helps.

Thats one persons findings...at least you come with back-up. I acctualy did the same thing last time i went to the track and i noticed basicaly the complete oposite you did. i ran an average of .17 slower with the snorkle and the fastest time of the day (the one in my profile) was without it.
The prob with these tests is that its impossible to duplicate a run...average is close but not acurate enough. A dyno is more accurate, but many things can affect it also. Bottom line, as 007 rudely pointed out, its a seat of the pants thing...take it out, see if you like it and make a desision. For me, any loss or gain that might come of it is completely overshadowed by the cool sound of the engine without it.

most people arent machines and wont drive their car exactly as they did the first time.

the way i see the snorkel is quite simple: if u want more airflow to your filter, pop it off. it just so happens that it makes your stock exhaust just a wee bit louder than normal. personally i dont sweat a couple HP/TQ measurements over a snorkel. if snorkels were a big thing, there would be aftermarket snorkels out there right now. instead u have cone filters with 360 degree filtering. i plan on getting a densecharger system cuz i hear alot of great things about it.
