Is an EGR needed on an old school street motor?

Hi All,

Getting ready to order all my rebuild bits for the 5.0 block. I need to order a new intake and am just thinking of something like the Edelbrock 2121 dual plane. look at the intakes most say available with or w/o EGR.

My question is: Can anyone explain to me if EGR is needed on an old school engine? If so what do I need (do I just order an EGR valve)? Although my block is a 1987 roller it is going to run on carb not EFI. Does that matter?

Any help is appreciated.

you do not need it you do not want it.only on a motor that will need to be smoged.

yep, no need for the EGR system. it is just another thing to cause problems.

The only thing you need to consider when building a motor for a non-smog car is, do you need vacuum for your brakes or auto trans. Other than that, its just how fast you wanna go!

Yup fast and straight! No power brakes, no power steering (quick ratio box) and a T5!!

The 2121 can't even mount an EGR valve, so no worries!

I remember back in the late '80's I had a '65 fastback with manual steering and loved it. But when I built my present fastback, I made very, very sure the car had power steering and that it worked and did not leak. The passing years have made my body appreciate such girly features. I do however agree 100% with having a manual trans though!

Got my block back from the machine shop. Everything checked out really good. It is a low mileage block which mag'd good, deck checked out perfect for warp-age, and still on stock bore . New cam bearings are in and it's now sporting a fresh coat of 'chevy killer' black .

I am in the middle of cleaning the carbon from the stock TRW pistons. Note that a spray and 1/2 hour soak with carb cleaner and then a scrub with a brass brush works nicely if your willing to put in a little time. I have decided to use my stock heads for now. The Ford Racing aluminum heads I have have been milled too much for my liking so I am going to mount the E7TE heads (will plug the EGR) until budget warrants the switchover. I will install the Magnum 281HR cam now though.

Not sure which gasket set to order. The Fel-Pro 260-1169 was what I was thinking but it says 'not compatible with HO motors'. So I'm thinking...ok well since I'm converting my HO to carb maybe this will work. Any thoughts on that gents?

Can't wait to start building it!!!!

Now thinking of using the Weiand 8124. Apparently it's good for about 14hp more over the 2121 (once I get the right heads on).
