i run 2500rpms with automatic and 4.10s... at about 70 mph.. i'm happy with mine, car pulls hard where it needs to. I get pretty good gas mileage actually.. but then again gas mileage is not why you buy a mustang. I fill the mustang up once a week.. about 34-40 bucks.. i put about 30-50 miles on it in one day.. about half of that is highway speeds.. 70-75. So don't fear the gear, i thought i would be steep with the 4.10s, but i'm not, i could almost use more gear lol

I am not satisfied by 4.10s, but that is only because they are not emissions legal in CA. No higher than 3.73s here or you get in trouble.

I guess, technically, I am not satisfied with my California Air Resources Board (CARB), not the 4.10 gears.

I had 4.10s in my wifes 03 GT and she drove it everyday and she got 20mpg around town and 24 on the highway and I think they are the best gear other than 4.30s. I think if you don't drive the car much definatly go with 4.30s but
4.10s would be great too.

From the response, I'm thinkin' 4.10's are the way to go.

I thought they might be too steep for driving around town but I guess 5th gear over drive will support that just fine.

My friend has a 01 Cobra with 4.30s and at 70mph he is crusing at 3.25-3.5k rpms. I don't know about you but thats I wouldn't want to be crusing at that high of an rpm for a long period of time.

Thats the only thing I hated about my 4.10s when I went to the track, we would hit 70-75mph the whole way there for 1.5-2 hrs and I would be hitting 3.5k rpms. My exhaust droned like a mother and I was sucking gas like a mother too. LOL

How are you at 3.5K RPMS at 70-75 mph with 4.10s? You should be around 2.5K. I have 3.73s and at 80 I'm pushing 2.8-2.9K.

I don't know thats what it would run at; it might have been 3.25 but I know I was over 3k at 75mph. I never really hit 70-75 other than when I went to the track so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. I got rid of them though and put 3.73s in but that was for racing reasons.

Live in Cali (not me) = 3.73's

I've done both,and am very satisfied that i went to 4.10's.Actually....i wished i listened to my friends from the start,cause i would've saved myself that extra laubour cost,and price on new gears both times.
Going from a stock 3.27 isn't reaaaallllly a big jump to go,"holy *****!!!"In my opinion anyways,and if you are deciding which one to choose,really what is the difference in choosing 3.73,or 410's,really,not much,same with this 3.90!!!These 4.6's are weak for torque,and that is with the 3.27's.Hell look at the 5.0L,they are a monster on torque with 2.73!!!!!!!
There should be a sticky on this....
What Muscle mustangs did in an old issue is gave a you a gear comparrison on 5.0L to 4.6L....so basically what equals out the seat out of the pants feeling like the old beloved push rod motor,.........the 4.6 needs that gear.
This is what they printed in the magazine.
5.0L = 4.6L

3.27 = 3.55
3.55 = 3.73
3.73 = 4.10
4.10 = 4.30
...ects.
I personally wouldn't waste my money going to 3.73 from a 3.27 on any 2V,or 4V.
Even if highway driving is in mind,but not for you according to your post...at 120 kilometers(canadian),my GT revs at around 2600rpm or so.My old stock F 150 with 4.6,4 speed auto,and 3.55's rev'd closer to 3000 rpm at the same speed....LOL,so am i worried about gas miliage now,not!!!My modified '03 GT still does better on highway for miliage then my now daily driver '95 4 banger dodge spirit.Maybe it's the guy tuning my GT...
All i know is that there is a number of us that started with the 3.73,and jumped to 4.10's with no regret.
Hell,i think a 4.30 wouldn't hurt if you just plan to race it.

3.73 to 4.10 is not that much of a differance at all...

You could always try making more power instead of getting steeper gears....

theres probably like .1-.2 at the most differance you will see from 3.73s to 4.10s

How the hell will they know that you have more than 3.73's? What do they do jack it up and spin the rear wheels and count the driveshaft rotations? That sounds made up to me, but they do got some stupid laws out there so I guess it's possible.

Love my 3.73's in my Cobra. Never had 4.10's though With my minor bolt ons if I downshift to second at 30 mph the car completly breaks the tires loose, so I dont see the purpose (for me) to get steeper gears. Just my .02

I think your gonna want more gear in the 4v.

4.10's in a 2v= 3.73's in a 4v
4.30's in a 4v= 4.10's in a 2v

the hp/tq curves are much different. I'd suggest asking the 4v crowd.

here is just a few threads I found on the topic. Once again, 4v and 2v cars are completely different cars. 4.30's are only 5%rpm more than 4.10's, and most people get around 20mpg on the highway with 4.30's in a 4v.
