I see a lot of companies advertising UP TO 20 hp increase. Would it be worth building a cold air kit? Can you actually feel an increase? I already have a K&N, I've seen a few guides out there on how to make one with PVC..

i think that 20 hp will only be realized on a car that already produces wicked amounts of power... a couple hp at best maybe but every hp counts!!!

yup, i got away with spending about $12 from home depot makin mine. some people paint theirs and make them look great and they are definately cheaper than those $150 ones. but the metal ones do look nice tho

I got a chrome one off ebay for $40 shipped, and I felt zero hp increase. It does however make the engine a little louder at WOT and looks nicerMine fit perfectly, only had to wrench on the IAT a bit to get it to screw in.

when my filter was in the engine bay, i logged incoming air temps of 170 degrees sitting at a light. at those temps, the timing really gets pulled back. that is where you can lose power. even when running, the temp never got below 110.

with the filter in the fenderwell, the incoming air temp never gets more than 5 degrees above the outside air.

it is not so much that colder air is that much more dense that you get a gain, it is more that the lower air temp allows the spark to be more advanced. that is where any gain (or lack of loss) would come from.

i recommend making your own with a piece of pvc and some fernco fittings.
