like the subject line says,as I would rather not remove the tranny lines,since I would like to just remove the converter bolts and leave the tranny in place.
The two times I have done engine work, I remember thinking there was very little clearence between the motor and the radiatior.
However, the Ford service CD does not have a step to actually remove the radiator. Note that Ford does call out several steps that the average Joe does not do.
IMO, re-installing the motor is easier if the automatic transmission is pulled back (loosen transmission mount) to disengage the TC from the flex plate. This is one of those steps that is easier getting apart than back together.
From Ford Service CD (better with pictures). Remove the hood.
Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
Remove the air cleaner and outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 .
Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 .
Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
Disconnect the fuel lines. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 .
Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water outlet adapter (8592).
Disconnect the throttle cable (9A758), speed control actuator cable and the return spring (8592).
Remove the bolts and position the cables and bracket out of the way.
Disconnect the climate control vacuum supply hoses.
Disconnect the two heater water hoses.
Disconnect the engine bulkhead connector.
Separate the harness in three locations.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Remove the safety clip from the manifold suction tube.
Disconnect the A/C manifold suction tube (19D734).
Disconnect the A/C pressure cycle switch (19E561).
Remove the nut, separate the liquid tube from the A/C condenser (19712).
Disconnect the power steering hose from the reservoir.
Remove the bolt and the body ground.
Separate the fuse link.
Disconnect the connector.
Disconnect the ground connector.
Slide the access cover up.
Remove the nut and the battery leads.
Disconnect the connector.
Separate the degas sensor lead from the battery tray.
Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
Drain the engine oil.
Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor connector.
Disconnect the LH heated oxygen sensor connector.
Remove the four exhaust manifold flange nuts.
Remove the starter. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06 .
Remove the nine bell housing bolts.
Remove the bolt and the body ground.
Remove the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02 .
Lower the vehicle.
Remove the safety clip from the suction tube.
Disconnect the suction tube at the receiver drier and remove the tube.
Remove the safety clip from the line at the evaporator core (19860).
Disconnect the tube from the evaporator core.
Remove the nut, remove the tube from the vehicle.
Remove the two nuts from the RH exhaust manifold.
Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
NOTE: The manifold will not be removed from the vehicle in this step.
Remove the six exhaust manifold nuts.
Lower the vehicle.
Remove the generator (10346). For additional information, refer to Section 414-02 .
Install the special tool.
NOTE: This step will allow removal of the exhaust manifold through the bottom and access for the installation of the engine lift brackets.
Using a suitable floor crane, raise the engine to remove the exhaust manifold.
Install the RH and LH special tool.
NOTE: Before carrying out this step it will be necessary to support the transmission with a floor jack and a block of wood.
Install the special tool.
Separate the harness from the bracket.
Raise the engine slightly to gain access to the transmission wiring support bracket.
NOTE: Adjust the transmission support jack as necessary to aid in the removal of the engine.
Using the special tool, remove the engine from the vehicle.
Remove the flywheel (6375).
Remove the separator plate.
Using the special tools, remove the rear oil slinger.
Using the special tools, remove the rear main seal.
Remove the rear seal retainer plate.
Mount the engine on a work stand.
I don't ever pull my radiator when pulling the engine. I also leave my transmission in the car. I found it easier dropping the engine back in with the motor mounts removed from the engine.
