Is it OK to Glass Bead Blast Heads?

Hey,

I have a set of gt40 Irons, that are a little greasy, and have gasket material,etc.. on them. And their completey assembled.

Now my friend has access to a glass bead blasting machine (Like a Sand Blaster) and was wondering if it is ok to clean my assembled gt40 irons with it? Just wanna make sure.

You can buy walnut shells from Eastwoods to clean engine parts too.

Talk to the people from Eastwoods about what kind of media you should be using.

EVERY time I come accross the "Glass beaded heads" the glass beads are always there... it is as if they NEVER get cleaned out of the water ports!! I would NOT glass bead!! hot tank at a shop is good for oil and grease... cool??

I agree with Thumper. If you did try it, completely disassemble the heads and block the guides so no glass can get in there. Then wash the heads REALLY good to get all the beads washed off/out.

Edit: forgot to mention to tape off the water passages or any opening where glass can get and not be seen to be perfectly clean when your done.

I agree it's a bad idea but someone is bound to try it, so be VERY careful and clean up meticulously.

glass beads in motor = rod knock in about 20 miles. It's pretty much impossible to get all of the beads out w/ out a severe cleaning. Bad idea.

The shop I worked at used three methods to clean cylinder heads:

Hot Tank (heated, caustic dip)
Jet Wash (very hot, pressurized water w/ a degreasing detergent)
Baking Tumbler (steel shot in a rotisserie-type oven)

We also used the hot tank and jet wash for all other iron parts (block, crank, rods, etc.) The tumbler was suited for heads only as it had specific racks to fashion the heads in place.
