Is this a bad idea or good idea? Will it tear up the bushings?

I recall hearing that petroleum-based lubes and greases can destroy poly bushings, but I don't know about WD-40. In any case, I can't see it lasting more than a few days at best. I take it yours are not greasable? I usually get heaviest high-pressure synthetic grease I can find at the parts store and use that and it lasts a good 5-6 months, but in your case that would mean taking it apart.

Keith, I also don't especially like the idea (though I'm not so worried about the PD but rather just that it wont last). I've done the squeaky spray stuff (Delrin squeaks a lot) and it's a pain.

I'd get the greaseable bushings or pull yours and machine a grease groove into them and tap a zerk.
