Hey Guys,

Working on the firewall and firewall side pieces on my '66 mustang, and was cleaning out the dril rail channel (with chrome drip rail piece was removed) and noticed theres some rust holes under the seam sealer. Is it possible to remove this piece to work on it off the car? Ie. to sand blast and repair.

The front looks like you can drill out the spot welds, but as the rail/channel gets up to the top of the window, it looks like it folds under with the roof..?

Any input would be great.

Thanks,
Nate

I've seen pictures on the web of early Mustangs that had the drip rails removed. It takes some time to get used to the looks, not to mention the issue of water possibly coming inside through the side windows.

I was trying to explain that I just wanted to take them off to repair them, or is it possible to do that?

Thanks.
Nate

You can remove them to work on them.

You will need a spot weld cutter, a sawzall, a cutoff wheel, and maybe a plasma cutter. I'm being serious.

While you CAN get them off, you probablly shouldn't. Just like the dash.

i agree with craig. how large are the holes? if they are small enough you might be able to use body solder to repair them, eastwood has a lead free solder kit you might check out.

I cut mine off. If you are wanting to keep them I would just sand blast it the best you can and fix your problem areas. If you cut them off you are going to have to reweld your seam since your roof skin and the door frame are held together with the gutter. I actually bent sheet metal to cover over that area after I welded it because I didn't like how it finished off after welding it together and I didnt want a bunch of bondo or fiberglass hiding the seam.

Hey Guys,
thanks for the responces. I was working on the firewall today, and took a closer look at the factory assembly manual and the drip rails. I didn't realize i would have to drill the spot welds thru the roof skin. Not about to do that, so will fix problem areas.

Only a couple of small pin holes, and some rust behind the lower front drip rail area. Just will be a super pain in the ass to try to run bead of seam sealer in there and get it all nice. Any tips with that..? lol
