im lookin for a motor for my 91 hatch to do the v8 swap. well i came across a '97 mercury mountaineer 5.0 with 97xxx miles on it, the guy says it runs good, its complete except tranny, the guy is asking 400, is this a good price? or should i try talkin him down on it

Sounds about right to me. You could try $350 and go from there.

get it for less - you don't have a donor Fox 5.0 to swap out all the stuff you need like timing cover, oil filter adpater, oil pan, etc.
