Is my dealer full of crap?

I was getting my 10K check up at my local dealer and he asked me how often I changed my oil. I told him between 3-4k miles and asked if it was bad or why he asked. He told me some crap about how great these new engines are on the inside and I am just wasting money changing that often and I could easily go 5-6 between changes. I am looking for everyone elses $.02 How often do you change your oil and is this guy just being a tard? Thanks again :SNSign: you guys rule

You can go that far with several engine lineups today. 5 to 6 K miles is not out of the realm of feasibility at all.
A lot of it is personal choice, driving habit, and operational conditions (environment).

Your dealer is correct.
With the new 'Stangs, You should change your oil about every 5K miles.
Look in your Driver's Manual; it contains a Maintenance Schedule according to 5K increments.

I read the manual, but I also owned a 92 turbo talon at one point in my life and that manual said that it was good for 6k between oil changes. Now any of us that have Friends with these cars (should get them help) know that a DSM car will burn off a whole quart of oil in 6K city miles. So there was no way to stretch that. Just asking I know the manuals say one thing but they are also written by a company that makes no money if you don't buy a new car ever 4-6 years.

I change my oil 3k regarless, It's not really a waste of money but some people are different though...

my toyota tacoma recomended every 7500 miles. i think this is do to close bearing tolarances and sinthetic oils. i bought a 454 chevy one ton from a friend of mine that had 230,000 miles on it (one owner) and he religously changed the oil every 2000 and when i tore it down it didn't even have a ridge on the top of the cyclinder walls and the intake valley was clean. that made a believer out of me that you can't over do it.

the manual does say 5000, but do you personally feel comfortable with that? i use full synthetic oil and still change the oil every 3000 miles. i would rather spend a few $$ over time than have a major service problem down the road. can you get away with more miles without adverse consequences? probably, but better safe than sorry. plus it gives me something to do.

Do car manufacturers and dealerships want your engine to last 300K miles or 20 years? Hell no! Change the oil and filter every 3K miles.

It all boils down to personal preference, Yes the manual does state, every 5000 miles, but that also depends on your driving habits, and environment conditions..ie, if you drive you're vehicle on very dusty roads, or in very air polluted areas, then the manual recommends, that you change your oil every 3 months, or every 3000 miles, on the other hand, if those conditions don't apply to you, then it's recommended that you change your oil, every 5000 miles, or every 6 months..As for your dealer, being full of crap..No, not at all.. He's being completely honest with you...My dealer told me the very same thing, that I'm explaning to you, right now..You just need to apply good common sense and then, use your own judgement..As for myself personally, I'll be using Mobil 1 extended performance, which is supposed to be good for 15,000 Miles or once a year, which will be safe for me, being that I only put 4000 miles a year, on my Mustang..I only drive it during the spring, summer and early fall, during car cruise season and car shows..Other than that, My Mustang is garaged kept. in storage..

Mobil 1 every 3000 miles & fresh filter.

An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure:

93 5.0 LX .....191,000 miles, all plugs look perfect, no compression loss.

The only problem with this is I won't do the 345 hp crate motor until it's burning oil and am still having to wait !!

I change mine every 5,000 miles.

I changed my 5.0's oil every 3,500 miles; but these 4.6's are way more efficient, have tighter tolerances, and just run cleaner. It's a fact

It's interesting because throughout my years of car ownership, I have heard this topic come up more times than I can count. You have the one group that says every 3000 miles and the other group that says 5000. The funny thing is, I don't ever recall hearing about ANYONE that has owned the car in question long enough and has suffered an engine breakdown due to not changing the oil often enough. So, with that being said, let's here about those engine failures that were caused and proved to be from lengthy oil changes (eg 5000 miles or more between regular oil changes).

I would change it between 3000-4000 miles, or at the 3000 mark approximately. Why wait longer and worry about it? Oil gets older the longer it's used, so you're not hurting anything by changing it sooner rather than later. For me it's better peace of mind as well.

I have carefully watched and I believe that the oil starts to get burnt a lil over 2k and by 3k it in need of replaceing.

i use mobil 1 and a good filter.i change it about every 6000 to 7500 miles as my driving habits change all the time.if i run it hard i'll change it sooner.

oil companies and places like jiffy lube want people to believe you need to change every 3000 miles. It is just not necessary these days for "normally" driven vehicles.

My grandfather used to own a Ford dealership, and when i got my Gt 2 years ago he told me that changing the oil every 5k was what i needed to do. I figure even though he was a car dealer he wouldn't lie to me.

when I had my 03 Civic EX, the recommended changes were 5K for the oil and 10K for the filter using 5W20, so.......yes.
