Is this a 2001 Engine?

Is it? It has the thing where you put the oil on the right side. Shouldn't it be on the left? The mechanic says its an 01. Im not too convinced though.

That is a 96-98 engine. 99+ engines dont have wires since it's all coils

Damn it! Should I tell him to get the 01 engine like he said he was? Or would it be too much work to put in an 01 engine in a 96?

it wont be that much work at all to put a 01 motor into a 96. you get the benefit of PI heads and intake. also the compression will be lower than if you did a PI headswap so you could run forced induction if you so choose.

I talked to the guy, he says that it wont pass emmisions with a PI motor. I just want the car running. Im still pissed that he lied though.

won't pass emissions? something tells me that's a load of bull. Technically, to be emissions legal with an engine swap you have to swap in an engine that was available in that model, in that year. So if I wanted to I could swap an '04 cobra engine in my GT and still be legal. But think about it this way, when they run a visual inspection, how many techs are going to know the difference by sight, between a non-pi and a pi motor?

not for nothing but i wouldnt even let someone who tried to shaft me on a bogus motor then still get the job.. for your own sake, please call up a flatbed and get your car moved to another shop asap!!!! tell us where you are i'm sure there's guys here on SN in your area that can recommend a more reputable shop.

well i can assure you that it WILL pass emissions. i work for a smog referee and as long as you have the emissions components that are at least up to par of the motor going in you will pass without any problem. CA law allows you to put in a motor that is newer than the body of the car. the mechanic doing your work obviously knows nothing about CA emissions laws.

o btw, when you get it smogged do make sure that you have stock emissions components and you are almost guarenteed to pass barring some unforseen problem with the motor.

yes that is correct. as long as the motor is newer than the vehicle it is ok. honestly most mechanics wouldnt even notice the difference if they do a ton of cars that are multiple makes and have no interest in ford.

Get your car out of there, tell him you decided to do it yourself; or your gonna make it a project car with your friends or something. Im sure a few people on here know of a respectable shop in your area. You might pay a little more $ but it's worth the peace of mind knowing it was done right the first time good luck to you

ya CARB laws are a PITA. ive often wished that they change the laws so that as long as you pass the sniffer test with a dyno run then you can run whatever you want. we also get to do tests on exhasut levels. theres a law that exhaust cant be over 95 decibels. the police only really target hondas because most of the cops have stangs, lightnings and camaros here.

i think its a way for the state to make more money. the companies have to pay the Air Resources Board a ton of money to get that sticker on their part. they do it because that opens up the CA market and its a HUGE market for them.

Actually, I'd tell the guy he's a dumbass...I mean, JC, it's got spark plug wires! A blind person could tell that this is not a 01 motor. (no offense to anyone intented. including the author of this thread, and, of course, the blind! )

I agree. This guy is full of . I would make him put my car back together and get it the hell out of there. If he wants to bitch about his labor time, just tell him that he shouldnt have lied in the first place (or at least he should have done his homework if he didnt honestly know...).

or, you can let him tell you it is a 2001 motor and have him install it, then discover later that it isnt and go to the Bureau of Automotive Repair and they will make him pay you back for not installing the part in which you requested.
