Is this a good block to start with?

Hey guys, so.ebody is selling this block for $100. They said it was from an 87 Cougar and I got the following pictures of the codes. Is this a good block to build and engine from? I'm thinking of a 347 stroker kit and eventually using it for a weekend driver. No racing or anything like that. Let me know what tou think! Thanks in advance!

To expand on my original post, I currently have a 93 LX which I cut my teeth on. Now, I thought a 302 would be a good engine to try my hand at building one. This will be my first time doing this and would eventually like to put it in a roller down the line such as another fox or 60s Mustang. Thanks!

E7TE is the standard 87 up roller block. If it checks out (magnaflux, not already 40 or more over bore, a bunch of broken off bolts and studs etc.), it’s plenty for your purposes. It should require some notching of the bottom of the bores for stroker clearance.

This is the date code. If you can tell us what it says I can tell you when the block was made

On the top-rear of the block, behind the lifter valley, there is a flat pad. On that pad was stamped the last eight of the VIN of the vehicle that the engine was in. If that can be posted I can tell you which vehicle it was in.

Not significant. The F1SE might have thicker bores but I haven’t seen anything definitive to prove this. It could also mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. F1se has provision for a knock sensor

I think this say 8A16

If so, that would mean Jan 16, 1988 was the day that this block was cast.


Just to add. Assuming the block checks out with no defects, I would use that as a starting point.
