You know its pretty hard to tell differance between steel and iron from a pic like that. Whats the dizzy model?

If its for your year,I would say its a steel gear,if its a generac 302 distributor,I would say its iron.

I bought it used. Its supposed to be a Ford distributor. It has a billet aluminum body but no Ford casting numbers. Any other way to tell?

Yeah, buy a steel gear so you know what you have....seriously. Good luck finding reliable information too. I went through hell about a year ago trying to track down a steel geared Duraspark distributor for my '68. Thing is, I went through hell over a new one, not some nondescript used one. I even posted a nice thread with all the gory details.

Steel gears will have a smooth, machined finish.

Cast iron gears will be rougher, textured finish.
