Sorry guys, I'm tone deaf. WTF is this sound? I thought an exhaust leak was more of a pitter patter... What is this?

Some info:
Car seems to be running fine, vitals look good. Drove it all day today, nothing seems to be acting up, just this strange sound that is barely audible from inside the car. Best I can figure is that it is coming from the driver's side, and isn't there at idle. It only comes on when I rev it up, and if I'm not mistaken, seems to be loudest as the engine is decelerating.

Let me know what you think.

I hear 2 sounds but kinda sounds like a bad pulley to me.

If you take off the belt does it still make the sound

What sounds do you hear? I'm talking about the sputtering whistle.

It's a 25 year old car... Some noises are normal.

Edit: I did try it with the belt off. Same noise.

Sounds like a blow off valve ! No really, the high pitch sound when you give it gas might be your mass air whistling a bit (as some are known to do), unless it's a new sound. The other sound, like a wabling noise, could very well be a bearing going bad and when it finds the RPM that makes it unhappy you get the sound. Check your water pump in particular, I've heard them do that before.

Oh, yea, sorry. The 70mm TB whistles a bit. I don't even notice it anymore.

Since the sound is there with the belt off, I can rule out bad bearings in anything.

This one doesn't even make sense. Besides, the starter is practically brand new.

Just tryin to help , honestly have no clue what that noise is, sounds kinda scrapy though, like something is grinding. I think i recall my old PS pump making a similar noise.

Whatever it is it sounds bad. When's the last time you pulled the valve covers? Replaced the timing chain? Time to cut open the oil filter for a look see I think.

The engine bay looks extraordinarily clean with alot of work done to it.

Ive heard that exact noise before on a 88' i used to have. believe it or not, I had a valve guide that went bad. It ended up causing tons of excess play(obviously) and the sound echoed pefectly out of the #2 header tube.

Yikes, I hope it isn't anything that serious. The engine doesn't even have 90K on it.

Huh? I don't get it...

How many miles were on that '88 when the valve guide went out?

I second this, sounds like an intake leak or vacuum leak.
