Is this wheel hop?

Pardon me for another question about wheel hop, but I've only been an SVT (and thus IRS) owner for a few days.

Today I tried my first burnout in my 01 Cobra Vert, only to have the rear end shake and vibrate violently before the tires caught the pavement. Is this the dreaded wheel hop or do I have a more serious problem?

It sure sounds like wheel hop.

I never imagined that this could be so bad. I mean how in the hell could Ford let something like this off the line?

There are things you can do to reduce it, but the IRS wasn't designed to be hammered from a dead stop.

Get Bilsteins

Dude, get some Bilstein rear shocks to replace the weak stockers. This is a very easy swap, will take you about an hour. This made a very noticable reduction in the wheelhop on my car. A pair will run you about $180. A good quality subframe connector like MM or similar should be on your list to firm up the ride too.

thanks svtpower, I do have a set of subframes on my list... are the Kenny Brown super subs still a good choice? Or is there a better one for the money out there?

If I could add something? Steeda has a whole complete kit for this problem and it practically eliminates this problem. It has bushings, control arm mounting plates, and a lot more to stop it because I've seen the carnage it can do.

Depends on what you want to spend.

My experience is with Maximum Motorsports subframes and they rock. I'd get those if I were you. Kenny Brown has some super extreme matrix thing too that looks pretty crazy strong but I know its heavy too.

I know there are packages that will eliminate more of the hop, but they are expensive and labor intensive because you need to push out and replace every single bushing in the entire irs. Still....if you got the time and the money go get em.

The only other thing I am going to do on mine is get the IRS pinion brace. It's already SO MUCH BETTER than the day I bought it, the little wheel hop that is left I can live with.

Go to your local mustang shop and see what they suggest. Mine fabricated and welded a plate and replace the differential bushings for less than $400, made a huge difference. Now, launching from 3800 rpm there is little or no hop and my 60 times dropped by 4 or 5 tenths.

Both will help cut down the hop ALOT and can be found on maximummotorsports website.
