Issue after installing the MM quadrant, firewall adj, and cable.

Hey all,

I installed the MM kit. The quadrant, firewall adj, and their recommended universal stock cable.

It's smooth as butta now but the only problem is that the clutch catches at the very top.

I'd like it to catch in the middle.

I have the firewall adjusted all the way in and the cable is still tight....as in no gap at all.

The quadrant is their one setting one so that's not messed up. The tranny end is hooked up like stock. I don't know why it's so ...i guess...short.

Any ideas?

Did you take off the rubber grommet from the cable where it meets the firewall adjuster, and trim off the little "ears" (plastic tabs) so it can be poked into there? There's about an inch of slack right there you're missing, if it's still on the cable. The firewall adjuster is supposed to take the place of that grommet. If you still had the grommet on there when you put it on and the thing is really that tight with it adjusted all the way in, then I can imagine it must have been a royal pain to get that cable hooked on either the quad or the clutch fork...

The kit should have come with the grommet removed.

Neither of the "universal" Ford cables I've ordered from MM had the rubber grommet removed. Wasn't a big deal, though, just pulled right off by hand and then I trimmed off the little "ears" on the thing before poking it on in there.

Nah it's installed correctly. The cable is the MMCL-11 part number. It's made for this firewall adjuster. The adjuster is installed right up against the firewall. The quadrant, MMCL-6, has only got one "hook".

It's installed correct. Just seems short.

Any ideas?

sounds like you have it installed correctly.
i believe a double or tripple hook quadrant would give you the extra room. i run a tripple with the fwa and the stock cable and have plenty of room for adjustment.

So does this mean I'll need to buy a different quadrant?! That blows if that's the case. I don't understand why it wouldn't work when the car is literally bonestock. lol! Maybe I need to put a call into MM and see what they say. :o/

Dave, as you noted, if you just buy the cable it has the grommet. He said he got the entire kit, which means is has the grommet pre-removed.

Calling MM sounds good. The kit should install just fine (I've not had an issue with their kits). If the FWA seated against the firewall (if you spin it around, the knob for the screw can get stuck on a raised portion of the firewall,which would 'shorten' your cable) and the cable is seated in the trans boss (where the cable seats, so the run to the fork is straight), I can't think of what else to check.........

i have the same kit without that problem..my FWA is about half way out and the clutch grabs about 3/4 of the way out

The FWA is seated correctly. It flush up against the firewall with the set screw holding it nice and tight.
At the tranny the cable is in correct too. I even have the c-clip holding the end of the plastic part of the cable in.

I'm going to snap some pics tomorrow morning and I'll post 'em up!! i'll also give MM a call sometime today.

I had the same thing happen - only I was trying to use a micro-click adjuster (which is thicker). Mine was so bad the clutch was slipping, so I had to put it back to stock. Then I went over to Summit and bought the thinnest FWA I could find, and it barely worked. Luckily, I like mine grabbing high, so it's okay. One thought I had was to pull the quadrant back out and grind some material off where the cable sits in the channel. I haven't tried it, but seems like it would work. Also, fwiw, I have a King Cobra clutch. Good luck.

hmmm....maybe a mod of the quadrant will be neccesary. Shouldn't be as I paid for this kit that should work. I didn't get a chance to call MM so I'll try again tomorrow.

I got the same setup in mine and it went right in and adjusted fine. I wish I had an answer for you to help but something definally is wrong. I read the post and tried to picture what it could be but I'm at a loss. unless it has to do with cable routing maybe . It's a pretty basic setup with the mms unit so I'm with the others call mms tech, they are very helpful. let us know how you make out.

Okay so a lil' update....
I took the car out today and screwed the firewall adjuster ALL the way in. It was out like an 1/4". That moved the point of engagement to exactly where I want it. Right in the middle. The cable has no gap at the FWA like MM suggests, to release the tension on the TOB but I'm fine with that. It's perfect right now except for the fact that I basically have not adjustment possible at the firewall. LOL! Anyways.....I can live with it.
