well, there is been a whining/howling noise coming from my 2000GT rear end.

i have try alot of cheap way trying to fix it, like replace axle bearing, change oil...etc. but nothing helps.

Finally took it to the dealer, they said (as i have suspected) the pinion bearing and carrier bearing need to be replaced. and it will cost $721. lower then i expected.

hopefully this will fix this annoying noise.

btw, where is this carrier bearing?

Carrier bearings. Plural. The carrier is what holds the differential. I have the same noise, and I have long suspected my front pinion bearing.

You are getting raped by Ford. The parts should be 20-30 bucks a bearing, tops. 2 pinions, 2 carriers, and 2 axle would put ALL new rear bearings in the $150-200 range of parts cost. A competent technician at a transmission shop should be able to do a full bearing swap in about 3-4 hours. Paying ~$70 an hour would cost you 200-300 in labor.

No way the total bill should be more than about 400-500.

well too late, they quoted me on 1:30pm and the car was ready by 3:30.

on the bill it said $450+ for labor, and you are correct only about 300 bucks for parts. man they charge 17+ bucks for the diff oil need 4 qts!! man last time i change the diff oil it only take 2. oh well.

now the car is so quiet, i am very happy with it. even the wind noise (coming from the rt rear seatbelt hole )which has always been there was gone too.

i think they have sold me a car with problems in the 1st place :bang:

this is my 1st GT so i though a sport car are suppose to be noisy.

If my calculations are correct, that would be a labor rate of $225 per hour. Boy am I in the wrong business!

oh no, they charge by the book. 1 of my friend works at a Honda dealer. All the jobs has a set hr chargable. if the machanic can finish a 2 hrs job in 1 hr he still get pay for 2hrs. my friend told me at one time he finished 20 some hrs of job in 8 hr day.

BRO!!!!! Just do it yourself. that race and bearing are easy to change. Helps if you have a lift though............

i would have done it myself, if i know how.
my friend is a machanic, he said there are pre-load for the gears and the limited slip thing. he said too much a job to be done at home.
