I'm about to finish up a junkyard 3G alternator upgrade with a 130 amp, my question is can I run the 4 gauge wire from the alternator to the positive on the battery? I know it's suppose to go to the solenoid but there's no more room. Thanks
no- you dont want the alternator to have power until the key is on and the car is running. Wire it to the solenoid post on the opposite side of the battery cable. you also want to have an inline 150 amp fuse
There should be a fuse or a breaker in the line to the alternator from the battery. The line can run off the battery.
If you want a power bulkhead to clean up space, use the power distribution block from 80s to mid 90s Chevy trucks. Its located in the upper passenger side of the firewall under a plastic cover. It has 5 posts on it the same size as one post on our solenoids.
You can find a place to mount it and run a cable from it to the battery side of the solenoid- then run power from it to alternator or any accessories.
Connecting the alternator to the battery positive post or the main stud on the starter solenoid where all the battery feed wires are connected is electrically the same. The very small amount of resistance of a 12" piece of #4 cable isn't a factor.
