Just getting a 66 and wondering about wheel size and tires

Guys,

All opinions welcome. Give me wisdom!

I'm just about to take posession of a 66 FB that is being restored for me. I need help on the wheels and tires - sizing. "Spirited" daily driver, crusing, highway and it rains here in CT a lot - not to be driven in snow. 620's with the 1" Shelby lowering in the front, grenada spindles, stock leafs. Otherwise stock suspension. Like the old school wheel look with aggressive cornering tires.

Wheels - My 1st thought was on the Torq Thrust D 16x8.
Tires - Goodyear F1 GS-D3 225/55

Will my choice work? Rub, noise, etc. What would be your choice on my car?

Any opinions, thoughts? Actually my 1st thought was to go with 17's since I think they are easier to get but I've heard about problems with the fender lip and I'd rather not have take a chance.

Also, any adapter issues to know about?

that would be fine. 17s work fine as well. I like the look of 16s better though.

Any possibility of going bigger?

I'd prefer to go with the same size tires in front and rear.

BUT, are 245's a stretch?

Personally, I ahve 235/60/R15's on the rear and 205/75/r15's on the front
(66 coupe)

I prefer the 17" over the 16". I believe the 17" will clear the upper ball joint in front allowing for a bigger back space. The 16" will rub the upper ball joint.

245s are too large to gaurantee good fit without rubbing. It might work on some cars, but not reliable for all. I have 16x8 in back with 245s and they rub over bumps (rolled fender lips). I will be changing to 225s (Kumho ECSTA MXs) on back and 205s on front (now have 225s on front with 16x7 rim).

Yes, the main benefit of 17s is clearing the upper ball joint up front, allowing more backspacing - also clears 13" disk brakes without problems.

So with the 16" wheels, what's the widest you can get in the back without fneder rolls or tire rub??

225/50-16 should be okay, but could still be a little tight without rolling the fender lips, maybe just at the tops of the fender. 215/55-16 would be fine.

I have a 66 fastback with vintage 45's in them and 245's in the back, 225's up front. I love the vintage's they really look old school with the added handling advantage of superior rubber
