The short of it, was a blast. I was the ONLY Mustang there as well as the ONLY American there, this time. Thanks for representing y'all! GEEEZ. Last weekend there was apparently 15 Stangs, oh well.

Anyway, I did okay considering I was up against the light, the fast and the furious crowd but definitely need to improve.

If you care to read the long version you can see it here. (there were two crashes too!)

"YIKES", all fast and the furious crowd, that had to suck. I guess you didn't have a lot to talk about with your fellow racers. You should of had a feild day with the 90% of them that you could out run. There's some fast ones, but the average seems to be somewhere in the 14's for these guy's. Then you get the twin turbo'ed 600 hp civic thats in the 9's or 10's.

let me tell you man, i got a few buddies who are strictly import and boy... they are annoying.

My one friend has an 89 crx... This car is so ugly and yet he sinks SO much money into it.

After all the time and work he has put into it, my car out of the deal is still that much faster and nicer than his.

I agree, but this wasn't a drag race event, this was road racing. :D

Nice read. One of these days, I'm going to track my car in some shape or form, whether it's an autocross (local SCCA region has 10/year less than 20 minutes from my home) or a driving school at Mid-Ohio which is little more than an hour from me.

BTW, what is the cost of the program you are participating in?

$125 and another $20 for timing. Covers one day. Includes lunch and all the water you need.

That sounds cheap. Did you have to go through a driving course/courses and get certified? At Mid-Ohio, the only thing I've found so far requires you to take 2 classes before you can even do any lapping and everything is $625 or more  If you already have a race license and a car built to a series safety specs, then you can do a testing and tuning program for $195 that gives you 3 20 min sessions. Mid Ohio

Whoa, well this isn't "a sanctioned timed racing event". This is a organization that rents out the track, hires full corner workers and safety, and then lets cars go out in groups in order of experience.

For training there's a drivers meeting in the morning and then an additional one for new folks. Then after every race they have a "driver's download". So people can discuss. They first three are mandatory too. You also have the option of instructors riding along with you for another $50 or so.

All in all it's a lot of fun and generally safe.

Here's the groups...

WHITE: Beginners, no passing
BLUE: Passing only on point-bys and only in the straights. (the group I was in)
BLACK: Passing only on point-bys anywhere on track.
RED: Full "race-like" conditions. Passing anywhere with no point-bys but no apex blocking or late braking.

I don't know what your beef is with the lineup you were with. I'd love to have a day when I'm the only "big" car. Where I track, it's usually me, maybe one other Mustang, and then an assortment of Vette's, Porsche 911's, Ford GT's, ect. I was sitting on the grid once when I realized that I was at least two liters down to every other car on the grid. Kind of puts you at the end of the line, you know? However, I've discovered one other thing (besides driver skill, as you mentioned) that can make you really fast. Total apathy! There's a guy I've run with at Hallett that has a early model SN95 V6, that's right, a V6, that's alot faster than you would think. He told me it's because he paid $500 for the car and really doesn't care if it goes home with him or not. He's got me thinking about the merits of a dedicated track toy.

So, you gonna make it out to Mustang Madness? I'm pretty sure there won't be any ricers at that one!

Except that this wasn't about racing in a straight line...
