Just installed my cams...

Well i finally installed my cams in my 2001 Mustang GT and it sounds bad..i have a question about the lifters..Well the lifters r noisy when u give it gas and i'm wondering if the noise will stop anytime soon?

Did you use assembly lube?

Is there oil in your engine? (sorry but you never know simple things can be overlooked)

Did you degree the cams?

Are you a fairly skilled mechanic?

Did you load the custom tune for the cams?

yes we used assembly lube, degreed the cams, yes i have oil pressure and i'm still waiting on my SCT Xcalibrator 2 to g et here with my tune. i'm hoping by letting it sit overnight and start it up after i get off work it will be fine..

did you compress the lash adjusters? And if so, did you rev the engine for 10-15min to pump them back up?

no i did not compress the lash adjusters..i revved the car for 5-10 mins and that didn't help out any..

For some reason I have yet to find the valve train gets noisy after the swap. I've had my Comp 262's in for close to 50K miles now and no drivability issues.

I've heard alot of people putting them in and they start it with no noises what so ever. But i just don't get why my lifters r so noisy.

are you sure it's the lash adjusters that are making the noise? Is it possible that one of the timing chains are off a tooth or two causing the valves issues? What kind of noise are you getting exactly?

Proabably the "clackity clack" sound.

Another possibility is its your injectors. On my other mustang when I installed cams, the injectors got noisier. I know other people have reported this as well, take a close listen and let us know.

Was there a strong power (SOTP) increase?

the noise i'm getting is a chattering noise coming from the valve covers..it does sound alot like the lifters..but i never really listened to the fuel injectors yet to see if that might be it..i even called the manufacture of the cams and they think it might be my lifters since they do have 115,000 miles on them..i honestly don't wanna go spending 160.00 on new lifters until i know for sure thats the problem..

I took a stethoscope and listened to mine and really didn't hear anything from the valve covers. I kind attributed to noisy injectors and left it at that.

eek. That sounds like valves on pistons. If the lifters were bad, or not filling with oil, you would notice a little play in the valvtrain components. Also, the lifters are a higher pitch click, where the valves nicking the pistons is a more metalic clacking sound, almost a grinding noise. Pop that timing cover and triple check the timing. I would suggest against runnin it anymore. If you do fix the problem, do a compression check to verify that you didn't bend a valve slightly and cause a leak. Good luck man.

One other thing you might consider from my experience... When I put my timing assembly back together one of the timing chain tensioners didn't properly seat against the block, and hence didn't pump up. It caused the timing chain guide to smack the inside of the timing chain cover making a pretty awful clacking sound, even though the engine ran fine.

It happened on the driver's side, so when I took the valve cover off, I was able to see the play in the chain guide when I tried to turn the cam with a wrench. I'm still not sure why the tensioner didn't seat right the first time, but when I looked at it, it was very obviously crooked. Got it seated properly, and it's all good now.
