I was thinking of setting up a 302 with a distributorless system, like on the newer mustangs, 96 to 99 I am not sure if the comp in those cars change between the years, but if you were to fab up a crank trigger, and the sensors, you would have to do something with the dist, hole, but you would get better hotter spark and more overall control with the comp. Just a thought, anything else I am missing to make it work??

The 5.0 Explorers came with DIS. You could probably use a lot of those parts.

Agreed with above. I would consider making a provision for a crank, cam, etc triggers and shudders as more than a small 'fab up.'

I have to ask, why would you want to switch? Just for the sake of doing so? These ignitions support more power than most of us make. The place where DIS really shines is in high RPM applications, which we dont have.

Just my two cents. If you decide to do a retrofit, let us know how it goes.

It would not be a simple task of fabing up the sensors, I wanted to do it just for something different, How many dis 302 do you see? I will have to look into which explorers came with the dis setup. A small block that runs 7000 rpms, it would be nice to have a dis.

I'm not absolutely certain when they started using the DIS system in the Explorer, but it was definitely in the last model, up to '01. A 7k RPM engine can still use a distributor though. It would definitely be an interesting project to undertake, I'm just not sure how it would all interact with the 95's EEC. Keep us up to date on whatever you decide to do, I'll definitely watch that build if you go that route.

I guess it is all perspective - my idea of high revving is a 16,000 RPM redline. 7K is nothing at all.

We do see lots of DIS 302's (GT40 Explor-aneer motors) - just not in stangs. I think the DIS explorers are EEC V, but have not researched that at all. I will note that many racers ditch DIS for distributors.
I did not mean to be discouraging - I was just reiterating that you were not reinventing the wheel.
Good luck with the project.

obviously i'm missing something, but if the 5.0 in the explorer was DIS, what turns the oil pump since it's driven by the distributor.
