Progress Thread K member is this a good deal?

Temporarily space the 6-1/2" speaker the minimum distance needed to clear the window track and see if it hits the plastic grill on the door panel. Some have had good luck making them work behind the factory plastic cover. Also, make sure that the speaker clears as the window goes up or down.

Yeah that might work, I’ll have to find some spacers, door panels at an upholstery shop getting touched up. Guess I could find a slimmer style or maybe not as big of a magnet on the 6.5. It’s not huge but there’s a depth difference from the original to the 6.5.

I just put some 6.5” kickers in the doors of my 89 a month or so ago and had no problems with the window. They did fit tight in the speaker grill though so I had to make sure they were centered or the door panel would not sit flush at the bottom. I ended up tracing around the factory speaker before removal to help.

Can you tell me the model number on those?

They are separates. I’m pretty happy with them. They are running off a Kenwood xr-4s amplifier. I put some used kicker 6x8’s in the back that I got from a j/y F-150.

A little door panel adventure lead to speaker changes, new vapor barriers and sound deadener, and after many different attempts finally getting the door panels redone. All in all speaker sound is much better, door panel inserts, and new map pocket delete add that little extra pop & cleanness!! Happy to be done with it.

That came out slick. Was definitely worth the effort
Couldn’t give up on it! Decided I’m buying the inserts from lmr and it can be done. The foam part where the insert lays had a decent 1inch foam padding, small cut to be able to pull it out. Puncture the holes and boom. The lmr inserts and map delete came with a cheaper clasp to hold them down, almost similar to a manila envelop style.

Looks really good man congrats, also what speakers did you end up going with in the doors?
Thank man appreciate that! I bought a package off Amazon nothing amazing brand was harmony. The dash speakers and rears went in no issues, the doors were 5.25 and seemed small. So I bought 6.5s from same company but the depth was an issue, ended up just going with some pioneers that were slimmer and fit perfect. Also probably not great but better than the original. Just wanted some I could do an easy swap, not running amps or anything. Have a newer alpine head unit so it sounds great until I start the car!!!!

Wow. Easier than I thought. Good to know the later panels can be modified for 87-90 style inserts.
Yeah they must have just used the same design as those years, being that they had all the actual holes on the backside of the panel they just weren’t punched in that section, since it was a one piece. Was worried that maybe I would be able to slip the armrests back in but no problems there. Once the padding was out it laid pretty flat, and the insert fit in that section nicely.

Wow that's nice combined with the rest of your nice car. I just put JBL 6 1/2 round speakers in my Jeep and they sound great. Recommended by Jeep forum, and they have nice bass
Thanks man! Heck yeah I didn’t even take into consideration that the window track would be right there other wise I could’ve ran some better quality speakers but the depth really limits you. I’m guessing that’s why guys who run some legit speakers in that section usually have to space them and end up modifying the speaker grill area on the door

Isn’t that motor and exhaust all we really want to hear anyway? Listen to the radio in the DD on the commute to and from work! There’s a reason the Cobra R had no radio!! Lol
