I just installed my K&N replacement air filter, and I have a (stupid seeming) question about it. Well the only way for me to get it on was to lock that black casing back over it, and I'm not sure if there was some other way to get the filter on there without that casing over it. I was searching around for answers and read that some one else said you can cut part of it off. So basically, is there any way for me to have just the K&N exposed, or is it not supposed to be?

No. The rubber bot that attaches to the air box is what people talk about cutting.
The way you have it installed is the only way to do it with the parts you have.

A drop-in K&N is a waste of time.

I replaced my filter into the stock airbox, can't really tell a difference . I don't know if there is a way to modify the stock airbox to expose the entire filter. I know why you're asking though- I'd think you could get more airflow with the whole filter exposed also.

Yeah, the part I was talking about cutting off was the black casing, not the filter itself. Thought the K&N would be better than the stock filter.

I know what you meant-that's what I was talking about. I think anything is an improvment over the stock filter. Aside from getting a CAI though, I'm not sure what you could do to expose the whole filter. You could probably cut the airbox but I wouldn't want to do it incase I messed up

all you have to do is take off the plastic air box(one bolt in fender with rubber grommet) and you can just clamp the filter in. It works good in my 01GT.dont need to cut anything.

I did this before and it works, though I had to make a simple cardboard donut to take up space (that the box had occupied) and create a good seal. I don't think it really made any difference though (being 'in the box' vs. free breathing, 'out of the box').
I've since scrapped all that and am now running a big K&N (leftover from my C&L MAF waste of my money experience) with a custom billet aluminum adapter that bolts directly to the MAF.

if u want to feel an honest difference, drop the entire airbox completely and get a 9x4" open filter. i honestly felt a difference over just a drop-in and removed silencer. quite surprising actually.

you can ditch the plastic box and still use the drop-in. get some sticky padding and put it around the base of the filter. then just use the metal clamp to pull it against the round backing after the maf. i know it sounds ghetto rigged but, eh, it works.

Why would you want to suck in hot engine air? AN open filter int he engine bay is going to suck in hot heat-soaked air...especially in the summer and especially if you are in normal city-type traffic.

You want to draw cold air in from the fender, or at least use one of the open filter kits that seals the filter away from the hot engine air.

And a drop in K&N isn't a waste of time. It's the last air filter you'll ever need to buy

Also, judging by his 1/4 mile times, it's pretty hard to argue otherwise.
