I did this before and it works, though I had to make a simple cardboard donut to take up space (that the box had occupied) and create a good seal. You want to draw cold air in from the fender, or at least use one of the open filter kits that seals the filter away from the hot engine air.
And a drop in K&N isn't a waste of time. It's the last air filter you'll ever need to buy
