What does everyone think of putting a KB on a 2002 GT daily driver with 45,000 miles. I put about 22,000 miles/yr on my car. I don't race, just want more power to have a little fun every once and a while. Also, can the chip that comes with the KB kit be calibrated for different gears than stock or would I have to buy a seperate calibrator. I am thinking about getting the 6lb kit and than a couple of years when I can buy another car for daily driver, upgrade to 9lb with all the extras.

I installed mine on my 2000 with just over 53K on the car. Now have 67K and it still runs great, and I do hit the track once in awhile.

I see zero issues with your plan. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the help. Now off to work to make the money. Just curious, how is the 6lb different from the 9lb. The KB is not like centrifugal blowers, where all you do is replace the pulley and get a new tune for higher boost?

The 9lb has the intercooler already installed between the s/c and the intake manifold. The 6lb has no intercooler, so you would have to buy the 9lb kit to get the intercooler.

Anyone install one with long tubes and an off road X pipe? I'm about to swap blowers over to the 1.7L KB(just for the low end torque aspect) and was wondering what to expect. I'll be using a 75mm TB(along with 42lb injectors and a 90mm LMAF). Also, does anyone know if I can skip the boost-a-pump if I already have the 03 Cobra tank / pumps.

Stock gears are fine, 3.55's are good but 3.73's are the max you want to go.

I have a 2002gt (built bottom) . I have gone throught the Vortech to KB transition. (15# SQ w/cooler 441rwh/392tq). 42# injectors , 90mm maf, cobra tank & pumps. Long tube + h-pipe .

KB 14# (428rwh/441tq) had to drop to 12# due to heat issues (Installing Gords heat exchanger). If that is not enough snow performance water/methonal injection. NGK tr6 (Denso 22's a bit too sensitive to heat)
Boost a pump has kept fuel pressure up . Don't think I could have done without it. Also have Boost a spark (Have not quantified the benefits).

410 gears with BFG 295 DR's (18")..

Yeah, I've heard about the heat issues(but not specifics) so I was just going to keep the boost at 9psi. I was just wondering if anyone had an off road x pipe and long tubes with this setup(9psi).

It looks like(from your pics) that you are doing about all you can to cool it down with the larger reservoir and the gordes 2 fan heat exchanger. The one thing that I don't understand is that since the IAT sensor is before the intercooler, how do you measure the temperature of the air going into the motor? I know on my current setup that the intercooler is before the IAT sensor so I can monitor that sensor and get an accurate reading of the air temperature.

What is your impression of the KB to the Vortech? Would you say it was worth the effort?

there is a coolant temp sensor in the intake manifold that the ECU uses in conjunction with the IAT sensor to set timing. Damn this thread is big!!

Vortech made more RWH and less TQ. Max boost was only the last few RPM.
Vortech was great at the track. Can really screwup at the start and still end up with 112 or so mph.

Had to wind it up. Never saw the end of the HP.. The more you spin the more HP you get. Around town did not feel the great pull until the upp rpm range.

Not sure the engine likes 7000RPM. (I had the Reichard intake.. )

Now KB. Would not go back even . Instant Boost. Almost square TQ. Head snaping fun... Great for the street. I suspect I will have to learn how to drive at the track now. Going to hold on to the 4:10's until it becomes a problem. With the BFG DR's I atleast have all of my gears above 1st....

Since the KB is boost all the time, not sure it can take long distance high MPH in WOT. I could run many Vortech back to back run's . May not have the luxuary. May get Water/Methonal injected for that kind of activity....

I think alot of it has to do with compression. The 03 cobras seem to handle EXCELLENTLY with the KB swap. Heat seems to be the only real issue...and i think if there can be some work done on the intercooling system it'll cool just as well as any other inter/aftercooler

Dan, I know about that sensor and I can monitor it on my ODB scantool. I was more interested in the inlet air temperature after it goes through the intercooler. I didn't know if there was such a sensor. My scantool just may not read that if there is one.

Really doesnt matter. If the car was cool (BTW monster power since , Water, Cooler water and everything else is cold. No timeing being pulled)

No matter what temperature you start from it get consistanly hotter during gear changes and consecutive runs. You could dyno all day and not notice this issue. Once you go out and slam through the gears , if your not carefull go boom....

Not sure what 03 Cobra compresion is. Mine is 8.9:1 (17cc dished CP pistons).. I think stock is 9.4 or so...

We are talking 12 or 14# of boost here. I suspect 9# would not be as much of a problem... (less boost less heat)

If im plannig on getting the KB 9 psi intercooled, would you recommend to stay with the stock gears or get 3.55's?

i'd stay with the stock gear and see how you like it. afterall, you always have the option to switch latter.
