Kick panel question from a newbie

I'm about to install new kick panels in my 66 mustang and was wondering where the screws go. Is there a factory location for them or do you just put them in anywhere? The old ones I took off did'nt have any so they're no help at all. It probably sounds like a stupid question to ask but I'd rather do the job right than half assed


If any one can post a pic or tell me where they go it would be much appreciated.

Every kick panel I have ever seen has screws. the kicks should have holes in them and the metal behind them should have holes too. Mind looked like the originals were just put in there...a hole was knocked in there and the screw was added.

I also would like to welcome you. I am confused, however, by your question. The kick panels you have don't have screw holes? The kick panels on my '65 did. Can you post pic's of your kick panels?

I bet the old ones are repro's and thats why they dont have the screw holes in them, and the new ones wont have them!

I have two screws in mine with the Pony Interior. One screw was dead center in the panel, just above the chrome strip and the other was in the lower corner, near the sill plate. I'm told these are the correct locations but I'm skeptical. However, I've seen '65s with two screws in the carpeting part of the panel, about two inches apart, dead center. That was on a 13,000 mile car, all original. That all said, I, too, would like to see where they really go, as I've seen them all over the map. Mine are currently out for refurbishing.

screw holes in the kick panels? never heard of that. i just got some new ones for the 67 and there were no screw holes in them.

oh man, my screw holes are killer, takes forever to find them, IF you find them. i got fed up and did new holes. also on the speakers, did you have ot buy super thin speakers? cause mine hit the metal.

You're right. They are repro's. I bought them from americanpony.com. The only picture I've been able to find of kick panels with the screws in them is from the Mustang 1964 1/2 - 1973 Restoration guide by Tim Corcoran and Earl Davis and even that picture was really hard to make out being in black and white. I guess it'll be the same location regardless of whether you've got deluxe interior or not right either way it's a dang site better than having the ones the previous owner butchered trying to put speakers in.

they are 180watt sony xplod 6.5". they did hit on the side, so i persuaded it with a hammer. fits fine now though.

I had a similar problem on my ute and solved it by cutting a spacer out of 19 mm MDF to bring the front of the speaker out from the kick panel a bit. Spacer screws to the kickpanel and the speaker screws to that.

i thought about doing that with some black ABS i had, but i didnt want the speaker to stick out too far, so i decided just dent the metal in a little since i was barly fitting to begin with.

I had a similar problem when I tried installing my Pioneer speakers. I used my old beat-up kick panels as a templete to mark the holes on the new kick panels. I then used a drill to make the holes.
