Hey alll,
Three wires are giving me a headache. In a '68 I have a black wire coming from the center of the engine bay to solenoid. The wire is 10-12ga. Where do I connect it to the new solenoid and what side of the ignition switch is it? I assume it is for the on/start position.

Next, there is a pair of wires that come off the harness that went to the original voltage regulator. They are solid yellow, and black with a yellow stripe. Where do I incorporate them. I assume that they are power to the fuse block but they are only about 14ga. If I am correct, should I upgrade to a 10-12ga? for safety?

Third, green w/red stripe that went to the "S" on the VR. Is this the key on wire? Regardless where do I put it?

Last is a brown wire in the same harness bundle that went to "I" on the original solenoid. Is this the wire that switches the solenoid to turn the starter?

Thanks for the help! :hail2:

Hey Worth,
Thanks, I have the wiring diagram. I am not good with the diagrams and that's just being honest. I need to know how to integrate the wires into the "new" harness and setup for the 5.0. I understand, for the most part but I am just overwhelmed combining the two. Thanks for any help.

The Brown wire that used to go to the solonoid "I" is to feed the full 12 volts to the coil while cranking. This bypasses the pink resistor wire from the ignition switch which drops to 6-8 volts while running to keep the points from burning up. It shouldn't be needed for your set up. hopefully you have gotten rid of the pink wire already. The wire that cranks the motor should be a red/blue from the Ign switch to the "S" terminal on the solonoid.

The Black wire sounds like it could be a power feed to the fuse block or the wire that carries some of the current to operate the old Amp gage setup. Hope you got rid of that too and got a volt gage instead. It would go to the Battery side of the solonoid. I would upgrade it depending on how many accessories you plan on adding.

The green/red that used to go to your regulator "S" is switched power from the ignition switch. I haven't done a conversion, but it seems this would be need some where in the ignition circuits.

Are you using a stock harness or did you buy an aftermarket one? If it is aftermarket, you should be able to get help from them. Otherwise a wiring shop manual of the year donor vehicle seems would be necessary.

Yeah, I have read a ton of articles and documentation on how to put the 5.0 harness in but there is very little info about what goes where and what is cut out from the old circuits. I am using a harness from a '91 that has already been stripped out and installed. Just the last few wires and I can drop the engine and trans, and fire it up. Woo Hoo.
