Hey guys...
I've just aquired a '97 roller 302 short block for my '65 A-code, I plan on retaining the stock clutch setup (unless someone can convince me otherwise-no cable though)..
Can you help me with what all I need to install the late model....
What I have so far..
'65 289 oil pan
'65 timing chain cover
'65 289 heads
'67 302 heads (came with car)
top loader 4-speed w/ alum. bell housing
Northern aluminum radiator w/ offset inlet/outlet
'65 dizzy w/ pertronix
going to stay carbed - so no fuel inj. ideas please.

I know I'll need internal parts...what I'm after is the list of externals to make it all work.

Thanks!!

What internal parts are you refering to as needing? . Aside from the rods being weaker than the old C8 rods, everything else works with a carb. Including the roller cam. Actaully an outstanding cam to use with a carb for everyday driving.

Well..maybe I'm a bit confused...I'm looking for help on making sure the water pump to radiator is on the correct side . .

does a water pump from a fox body bolt up to the '65 t-chain cover? I believe the inlet is on the dr. side of engine (for the fox body)

I'm also assuming the oil pan is not a problem??

As for the rods...not sure if they will be a concern, car will be more for drive to work on Fridays and weekend joy rides. will not see any track time...

Depends on the timing cover and pump. If you're going to keep the 65's accessories, then the pump you'll want is a late 88-up Crown Vic. But even it may or may not fit the 65 timing cover. There were two separate covers in 65, one will fit the Vic pump, the other will not. Once you've got this figured out, you'll need a new timing pointer or use timing tape to match the timing pointer you're using to the 88 balancer. Probably best to use the 65 acceesories, timing cover and water pump to match the radiator inlet. But you'll need a 50 oz 3 bolt balancer for this. If you use later model accessories, you'll need a longer bottom hose. Anyway you go, there's going to be something to address to make it all work. For your intended use the rods will be fine. The roller cam could use a set of 1.7 rockers to improve the lift specs at the valves though.

I would use all the 65 stuff and get a 50 oz balancer. The 4 or 3 bolt does not mater unless you plan to use your stock vbelt pulley's then you will need a 3 bolt. I went with 4 bolt dampener and ordered the march aluminum v belt pulley's. Make sure to plug oil dipstick hole in the block. You can give me a holler if you need to look at anything. I live in Skiatook and have been through this. also have a few spare parts laying around. Some are 67 specific though. Todd at Mustang 1 in Sapulpa can help as well. They have about anything you could need.

What I have so far..
1.) '65 289 oil pan
2.) '65 timing chain cover
3.) '65 289 heads and '67 302 heads (came with car)
4.) top loader 4-speed w/ alum. bell housing
5.) Northern aluminum radiator w/ offset inlet/outlet
6.) '65 dizzy w/ pertronix

1.) Use the 65 oil pan and pickup.
2.) Use the '65 timing cover, pump, and accessories. The block may have alignment dowels for the timing cover that the '65 won't use; just remove them and align the cover with the crank damper.
3.) Can't go wrong with either, but you will have to check the valvetrain geometry either way and get the appropriate pushrods.
4.) You will need an adapter pivot bracket for the engine side of the z-bar pivot. Latemodel engines don't have the threaded pivot post hole in the block.
5.) Is it in the car and working already? If so, just keep the '65 timing cover/pump/accessories.
6.) You are going to need a steel distributor gear if you keep the roller cam.

You will also need a pilot bearing if the 5.0 doesn't have one. The roller type for a 5.0 Mustang will work fine with the Toploader.

Don't forget about the flywheel guys...

You will either need to have the flywheel reballanced or get an aftermarket 50oz flywheel that supports the old 11" clutch.

Are the 289 or the 302 heads 4v heads or 2v heads ?

Use the 289 heads, these will be the earlier pre-rail rocker heads. They will need hardened pushrods though. Ditto on needing a steel cam gear for the distributor. A stock 88GT Mustang flywheel will work with the Toploader bell, but you'll need to also use a diaphram pressure plate for the 88GT to fit the flywheel.
