I have done the search forum thing with no luck and spent 3 hours looking through the posts. I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, since this is my first time posting on this forum, so pleae forgive my ignorance.
I have 1 1965 mustang and I am trying to swap in a later model 9 inch housing with the big bearing 31 spline axels. My problem is the leaf spring/shock mount plates. The ones off the stock 8 inch are too small (of course) and the U-Bolts dont even fit around the axel tubes. Ive been to several Junkyards looking, but I could use some direction as to what model and year I should be looking for.

Has anyone had this problem before? Is there a kit that I could buy to fix this? Is it possible to modify my old plates to fit the new axel tubes?

Thanks for your patience.

I believe only the 64.5 through 66 Stangs had the tapered down axles. So you shoule be able to get a set off a later model Stang, or just get a set of Lakewood traction bars to replace the plates altogether. The Lakewood setups come in both the tapered down and non-tapered down versions.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to get on www.ultrastang.com but their site is down or my pc is acting crazy. The Lakewoods wont work since they dont hold the axel to the springs, but the slotting of the plate is a good idea and I think i'll give it a shot. Thanks for ya'lls time and help. I appreciate it. :D

I installed a 9" rear from a '59 Galaxie. Used the spring plates that originally belonged to the Galaxie - worked fine. I used them with u-bolts that I think were for a 69 Mustang - some year that didn't use tapered axle ends like the original '65 9" rears.

Yes the Lakewoods will work. If you say they won't then you are looking at the wrong product. I am not referring to the cheap bolt on universal traction bars. I am referring to the bars specific to Mustangs that replace the entire bracket and come with new proper sized u-bolts for either the tapered down or non-tapered down housings.

All great advice thanks agian.

Your right Realmongo, I was looking at a universal pair. I have started to drill out the old plates and will weld up the old holes once im finished. I should have it in by the coming weekend. /crosses fingers

Thanks agian
