LAUNCHING IN 2ND WITH STOCK GEARS

Man what the hell...what is up with all the BS here? I actually was interested in a reply to this question. Does that make ME gay? There are thousands of threads on this forum so if you don't expect repetition or questions you think may be "gay" or "stupid" then don't log on to the forum...JEEZ!...it's not so much the threads that can make a forum look weak, it's also the smart ass replies...

Oh let me flame myself to save whoever thinks me backing up this thread is gay...how you supposed to learn if you don't ask or try?

Yes, i have tried a hard launch in 2nd.

No it does not help. You pretty much bog all the way to 35-45MPH before you start picking up speed.

You have good tires...just start in 1st. I pull 2.0 60 footers with my stock goodyears all the time at the track. I don't really have a prob spinning at all.

the answer is, no it will not net you better times, it will most likely beat the **** out of your clutch. You DONT want to do it. Starting on the street in second, not launching is fine. This is not the first time I have heard or seen this starting out in second. I actually watched a douche in a gts viper do it, pretty sure he took a lot of life off of his clutch too, since It was still stank of burnt clutch 3 hours later when he left the track.

I thought it was a decent question as well. Some people just want to see what they can type I guess.

I still dont understand how someone can think this is a decent question. I mean, simply, if launching in 2nd with stock gears would net you better times, why wouldn't I do it? Or Bill Putnam. Maybe I just have a little more drag racing common sense than most, even though I knew 2 years ago 2nd gear was a mistake when I first went down the drag strip.

The only time i ever launched in 2nd and ran a faster time is when i used to run my Ruf Porsche 996 Turbo AWD with 700HP in the 1/4 mile while playing Gran Tourismo on Playstation. Rev to redline and drop the clutch and you still could spin the tires all the way til 4th gear.

If you enjoy your 5 speed (SHIFTING) then why don't you enjoy the 3rd shift at the track?

But no, that is one of the siliest things I've heard. 1st gear is meant to get you moving quickly, 2nd gear is not meant for that.

Rain is not the track.

Sometimes people need to learn to just answer the damn question instead of trying to display their E-wittiness over then net... I get it, you can diss people in many ways and by clever typing. Not trying to "flame", it just gets old, that's all.

On another note, it would be interesting to meet the people behind the keyboard and see what they're really like...it's hard to get subtleties from everyone's overly sarcastic typing sometimes.

if you don't like shifting a lot, I've got a set of 2.73 im my garage you can have. you can break every speed limit in california in second gear (in a manual) with those bad boys.

I think you should get 4:30's and launch in 3rd!!! I thought the 2nd to last number in the gear ratio was what gear you are supposed to launch in!!

4:10's Launch in 1st...
3:27's Launch in 2nd...
4:30's Launch in 3rd...
3:55's Launch in 5th...

okay im not going to get caught up in this, but ill answer the question.
Dont launch in 2nd at the track ever. Dont launch in 2nd when racing ever. Starting in 2nd on the street may be okay, but it stresses the drivetrain. (esp. with 3.27s) Start in first when you race. It will get you off the line quicker, and into your powerband quicker. Learn how to slip the clutch and keep your rpms up so you dont bog, and you will accelerate much better in 1st then you ever could in 2nd. its like a bike. you dont start from a stop in the steepest (sp?) gear, you start with the lowest and work your way up to accelerate the smoothest/best. Launch in first when you race/drive. its simply faster.

sorry, even though this is the web. its still like the real world if not worse. People aren't nice, I have to deal with it everyday. If someone doesnt like my responses they can respond back, i dont really care. Put me on ignore, I doubt that will happen because everyone enjoys replying to my bs as much as I like typing it.
