So my father in Fresno California is teaching a class called "Hot Rod Technology" at the local Fresno City College. My car is part of the project and thought I'd share with you guys the progress they've made already in 2 days time. The class aims to give students a hands on approach into rebuilding and customizing cars. I need to update the description more, and my father needs to take some pics with students in it, but its hard to explain digital cameras to a 49 year old man ;D

What kind of goals do you have planned for the project?
Street/strip, g-machine, cruiser?

Do you have to pay for the materials or does the school pay for everything and you just donate your car for a project?

Yea, some of the students said they could have done it in 3 hours. My father tells me he has 38 students in the class. They are doing other projects as well, such as doing brake lines and wiring. So hopefully pics of that will be up eventually. I assume its not fully stripped because he is explaining the process as it goes and trying to get as many people as possible involved. But also I think the pics he gave me were actually from only 1 night of work. I know the engine and radiator have been pulled but he did not take pictures of that yet.

Off the top of my head these are what my dad and me have discussed.

289 pulled and replaced with a 5.0 or a 4.6 DOHC engine
Front Disc breaks (possibly rear too)
Update suspension
Full Rewire
LED Taillights
Updated Headlights
Shave door handles with poppers
Electronic Windows
New Heating and Cooling
New Gas tank
New Paint Job
Fix rust on floor panels
New Dash Pad
New Gauges
Reupolster seats along with replace the current seats with something nicer
Carpeting

So essentially we're talking full restoration mod. If you look at the 1st Blog entry I did a photoshop mock up of how we're kinda directing the project.

I'm having to pay for some of the parts, some are being donated or found. We've e-mailed companies and asked for donations since this is for the education of students, some have replied very interested and offered parts. I'm going to talk to my father about doing product reviews and talk about the installation process of some of the aftermarket products for mustangs.

And as far as donation goes, like I said, my father needed a car, and mine was available. This is the 1st time the class has been taught, and the school did not give funds for it.

Another day....

carpeting, dashpad, and gauges have been removed. Radiator is also gone and engine should be removed by next week. We're doing mockups of possible seats for the future.

I got a strange question, has anyone ever seen a side mounted gas opening on an old stang. My dad was asking me what I thought about filling in the rear and doing some different taillights and doing the opening to the gas tank on the side. I guess how some new mustang do the billet aluminum.

I thought of mounting my gas cap on the rear pillar a little while back because i was going to mount a cell under the package tray. (ultimately decided against the cell, 16 gallons of gas weighing 100+ lbs would severly affect handling being mounted that high up) I did a few mock ups with different gas caps and it looked decent and unique. A billet fuel door on the quarter might not look bad either. You can run down to autozone and pickup a fake billet gas door sticker (made for those wanna be rice racers to stick on their stock door) and try it in various spots to see how it would look. There are only 2 problems you might run into moving the neck. 1. Where it is stock the neck and rubber connector are guarded by the trunk
latch mount. 2. You wont be able to just pull up to any pump you want and not have to worry about which side the filler is on (not major but i like it)

Also have you thought of below the rear window with a flip style cap? it would give it a european sort of look and still be unique.

I did see the SN65 did the side gas tank and its pretty seamless. They kept the rear the same though and kept the other gas tank entrance.... I am curious to see that filled in

I guess I should open photoshop and do some work...

I'd have to dig it up but i had a photoshoped pic i did where i shaved the cap and tail lights. I was thinking about doing those thin LED strips for brake lights hidden in a spoiler trunk lid. I decided against it though as i want people to know when im stopping. It did look sweet though!

This sounds like a really fun class and it's going to be a great experience for everyone. I must say, though, I'd be a little nervous if I had 30-some-odd people of questionable experience wrenching on my car

good luck with your car. Looks like you could have some pretty cool modifications.

my 65 was sent in to a vo-tech school by the previous owner...needless to say my wiring is a nightmare and ive found sealent and body filler in some strange places. But if your family is overlooking it then im sure it will turn out proper.

From personal experience, I would ditch 4.6 motor idea with a quickness. That will be very labor, financial and experience nightmare. Nothing is cheap with these motors and it will take FOREVER to finish. Im finishing up a sohc in a 66 and its been a long road. With the progress thats going on, it would probably take well over a year. The wiring is a nightmare as well as stuff you have to get to make it all work.

Yea, we're pretty much ditching the 4.6 DOHC engine idea. Getting the Mustang 2 front end and a lot of other stuff would side track the project for awhile.

I'm still trying to explain to my father that a stock 5.0 is nothing to write home about though. So hopefully we do something intresting like forced induction and a rebuild on it. But I'd be happy with a 5.0 with EFI making 250 RWHP

Does the class have access to a block boring/honeing machines? Maybe you could do something like a decent 331 build up? You could use pretty cheap parts (dont go with forged crank/pistons) and build for mild hp. You would easily get 250+ rwhp and the kids could learn about how the internals of the motor work. You could probably have them tear down your stock block, then just have it sent out to be machined. I just finished putting my motor together and I learned a ton. Very worth it.

I'll call my father tonight about that. But our family friend will more than likely do the engine work for the car. Im sure they will disect the 289

We talked about a stroker, but we're still kinda going for fuel economy. If we do EFI then ill program it for the driving conditions of that day.
