i have been reading a few articles and listing to a few people on the subject of single turbos vs. twin tubos. The question i ask is which one of these setups is the best. I assumed that hey turbo = good twin turbo = better than good. But i was talking with a supra owner the other day and he said that he took out his twin setup to go with a single cause he could get more out of it.. so that got me woundering about the differences. i myself do not know a lot about turbos in general but diff. would like to get some opinions on which one u guys think are better?

Generally twin turbo setups utelize a smaller turbo paired with a slightly larger one with the expectation that the small one will spool quickly and provide lowRPM boost and the larger will provide highRPM boost. Single turbo setups usually consist of one turbo, usually as large as possible to spool, to provide massive amounts of boost higher in the RPM range. The drawback to that is you'll be running virtually NA until you hit boost. Some people overcome this by using nitrous to spool it up and also launching from higher rpms... Which is really better though I couldn't tell you, i'd be willing to venture that a TT setup is more spendy than a single turbo setup. Wait for HOTMUSTANG and other people with actual knowledge on the subject to chime in and you'll get a better description of the differences and benefits of each system.

Apples to Oranges.

The TT setup on a Supra is completely different than what you'd use on a mustang, or any other v8/v6 car. The TT setup in the supra's were twin sequential turbos, meaning they were inline with each other. They had one smaller turbo which spooled up quicker in the low rpms to take up some of the lag while the larger turbo spooled up. On a v engine you will have a turbo for each bank. As for which is better I've seen huge numbers out of both. And both have their good and not so good points.

thats kinda what i assumed probly all depends upon the drivers thoughts cause i saw him puttin a 1000 hp from the twin and he wants to go single to get more...

for drag racing id say single cuz you can spool up at the start, if just for street perforamnce you'll notice major turbo lag while its spooling up. For street the TT is good cuz it offers low end (at least for turbos) power and compounds still in higher rpm's. On a V8 you'd have 2 same sized turbo's, the bigger the better. I'v seen two 74mm's(HUGE) on a NPI....1200hp

when toyota set out to design that engine they said "lets build an engine with overall driveability and power in mind" not "lets build an engine with 700hp that'll spool up around 5k, scew the low-midrange"


the stock setup on most cars have smaller turbos that'll spool quicker (better for everyday driving) but won't support astronomical hp numbers (drag cars)

yea the supra want stock at all but hes the only one i knew at the time with a twin setup to base my opinion on not a lot of guys in my area have TT. i know that it would be diff. from me i just didnt exatly know the extent of the differences.

It depends if it was a pre 93 supra tubo only japan's 2.5 I-6 had TT's the domestic sold had a single turbo 3.0 I-6. After that they came w/ TT's stock and most go single when they want 600+ #'s. Well they are dyno queens so it isnt that hard, tough as hell iron block. But the difference between a 400hp Supra and a 750hp Supra is about .5 sec in 1/4 mile.

Twins are better all around IF SIZED PROPERLY for V6/8 type engines.
NOTE: This info does not apply to 4 bangers or straight 6s/8s, as I am not too familure with whats best with them.....

A guy on turbo mustangs had I believe a single 88MM turbo...switched to two 76MM turbos, and his car spooled something like 500RPMs quicker to full boost, and two 76s flow more air than a single 88, so its peak potential was also raised.
I also recall him running quite abit faster in the 1/4 mile.

Twins also for the most part retain your exhaust note.
Singles make your car sound worse than a mid 80s chevy V8 truck with glass packs, because it combines your exhaust into 1 pipe. (think camaro sound)

Twin> single if setup properly....

only reason people run a single is
A. space
B. so they can run in the single power adder class. (single turbo> centrifigul)
C. Lack of knowledge (adverage supra owner.thinks single >twin in every car)
D. to save money

Other than that there is NO reson to go single, especially on a V8. If you want 800RWHP, you can get it with twins....and the twins will spool up MUCH faster than if you went single. (again if you sized the twins correctly...2 100MM turbos wont spool up faster than one 88MM turbo. DONT over do it)

Yea, turbo lag sucks, but my buddy has a saab that does 24 psi, stock might I add, which i've never seen before, with a t-25, and I must say, that as much as it sucks waiting for the turbo to spool up, there is nothing quite like feeling it kick in as the boost winds up, it just puts you in your seat. Some say turbo lag sucks, and yea, it's slower, but its sooo much fun That sucker is pretty fast for a fat car, he will hang off my bumper in the lower speeds, and we have wasted a couple of 5.0's.

yea i ran into a saab the other day the thing was rusty as hell again people on so i thought it was notin but then we went and i had him for a couple of cars then he cought right up to me ... it was crazy
