Lifter ticking...

Finally got tags and insurance and such back on my car so i've got to do a lot of driving in it here lately. I've noticed some ticking noise coming from the engine and i thought it was a lifter, and my brother agreed that thats what the noise was. What would cause a lifter to tick, and is it doing any harm orrr what? I plan on pulling off my intake to put on a mild single plane and new carb, so i guess that will be the time to go ahead and pull it all down and replace it. Can i order just 1 or 2 lifters or whatever from anywhere since i don't need a set of 16? Thanks guys for the help...

If it is just one or a few lifters, why would you take the chance of reusing when you have the intake off? If one failed, wouldn't it make sense that others may follow suit soon?

well i asked my dad about it, and he said something about he had problems getting one of them in or something, and IF its thats the ONLY one thats failed then i wouldn't see any problems with putting just 1 new one it. If its a different one or there are more than one failed, then yeah it makes since to go ahead and replace them all...

Anybody know of some good hydrolic lifters???

if he had probs putting it in, the lifter bore may be damaged, so a new one will just do the same thing.

Lifters are not hard to put in, even with the heads installed. Use a magnet to pull them out, or there is a tool specifically for this purpose....but I usually just use a magnet unless it is sticky. Replace them all.

Its not going to cause any problems if i drive around with it for awhile is it? Its gonna be a few weeks before i get the new intake and $$ for the lifters, so its either drive with it or bum rides...

Put all new lifters in, so you don't have to tear it apart again if the same thing happens next week to a different one. No damage immediately, but the slap causes by slack in the lifter may damage the rocker arm and push rod. I've seen ones that were pointed and had a small pin sized hole worn through the rocker arm.

one more question...are all lifters created equal? Im not gonna get like stock replacement ones or anything, just curious if theres any difference between say the high end comp and crane ones, and these rhoads lifters that are suppose to be variable duration with equals more torque in lower rpm ranges. Their only like 10 bucks more, so its worth a shot i guess, but does anybody have any experience with them?

Just get a decent set of lifters from any of the reputable cam companies and you will be fine, you can even get Summitt lifters and save some $$$ because they are Crane I have been told. Rhodes lifters are noisy and overrated in my opinion from the experience I have had with them but others might disagree so you will have to make that decision.

I have a set of Melling lifters I picked up at Autozone in my engine. No problems yet. Have you pulled the valve covers off and checked the lash? Maybe something backed off.
