lock nuts

Anyone have any ideas, or ways to get lock nuts off without having to go to a shop and have them do it. I need to change my brakes bad, but I cant get none of my wheels off. Im on a 20 dollar budget with this one...

Hammer a socket over them so it fits tight...then remove.
