I was doing a burnout and went into 2nd gear and then the car jumped so I got off it and went about 30 feet and did a U turn and thats when I heard some loud knocks in the back. It drives fine straight but not when I go to turn. MY buddy says the spiders locked up in it. So I took it to the shop and Iam going with a set of 3.89 gears and a locker of some sort. Looks like it will be about $1200 thats what he said and I only $1857 in the bank that means the heads have to wait. Iam just waiting for the phone call so he will tell me what is wrong with the car.

the guy is raping you on the price, you can get a new detroit locker for $400, gears for $180, if he's gonna charge $620 to install you should go somewhere else.

Oh yeah, you either have a spool or you have spider gears-can't have both. Also, spools and U-turns don't mix.

I know I have spider gears but they locked up and it acts like a spool now. Ok I got the call from him and the gears Iam going with are 3.73 and a Auburn Gear Pro series locker. Yeah this is some bs on the price. THe last time he did my car it was just $860 and he did the hole thing. This time around I think it is so much because Iam putting a locker in the car which is $400 bucks he said he is doing new bearing and the everything else again.

your luckey the car still drives.... I had a buddy blow out the spider gears in a 3/4 ton rear end (10.5 inch??? ) it locked the rear end right up and punched the spiders through housing... it destroyed the whole rear...tell that guy to check the bearings in the rear, infact its probly a good idea to just change em anyways, then its all reabuilt....

burnouts with open diffs are not such a good thing.....

how did your spider gears just lock up? maybe a tooth broke and made something bind

If he did the gears last time, and they just tore up, and he's getting you on the price, I know I wouldn't go back. From what I've heard the Auburn is a decent unit, most will say not to do much dragging with it and it doesn't really like slicks. For a fun street car its probably a good choice, its a limited slip though, not a locker. I would strongly consider ebay, there are lots of 9" chunks out there with good gears and and trac-loks/posi/lockers for around $500. Thats the route I went...

dont go with over a 3.55 gear unless ur wanting NO top end. if ur gonna drive this alot go 3.25 or 3.55 gears. Ronstang came over and we removed a 4.11 spool outta mine and put a 3.00 open in. It now doesnt turn 4 grand + at 70mph.

another thing i learned from ronstang and today's learning adventure, doing a rear end and gears, DO IT YOURSELF! It is SO do-able.
