not sure of the exact reason, but im guessing its b/c you're putting out more emissions since you're removing more exhaust from the motor.
because long tubes requires removing the OEM catalytic converters which is against federal law. technically removing replacing any catalytic converter with a non OEM or CARB approved catalytic converter for your specific application is against federal law. have fun while it lasts guys, word is in the CA smog community, the whole country will be required to use CA smog testing rules and equipment within the next few years.

Thats crap, why don'tthey fix up some of the stuff that actually needs to be done rather than target a select group of people. Like have any of them ever seen semi's they are freaking smokestacks. Smog testing is so gay, lucky for my emissions test they jsut plugged into the OBDII... didn't even look at the underside of my car.

a lot of this stuff is all he said she said. im not calling anyone a liar, but there have been several legislative bills that if passed, would have a huge affect on us. for example, PA trying to ban aftermarket exhaust has been going on for years and every year it gets shot down. and the whole tint thing in michigan. now, standardized smog testing for all 50 states isnt targeting performance enthusiasts, but it will have the biggest impact on us, and in reality its not that far fetched. but i think that if if happens, it will be at least 10 years down the road, even though is probably should be sooner.
i think its crap too. however, if you have been to LA you understand why they have the laws. the air there about 10 years ago was literally unsafe to breathe. now its been cleaned up a ton. and no im not an environmentalist, i just like being able to go outside and being able to breath clean air and drink clean water.

i know what you were saying, and i agree. i no tree hugging hippie, but i do think we need to take steps to clean up the environment, and do something about global warming. i dont know the ins and outs of it, but i think it will bite the entire world in the ass unless something gets done. its one of those things that we all know about but dont worry enough about, or just think it will go away, or we'll be gone before any real affects are noticed.bdcardinal said:

think of it this way, gasoline emissions=water and diesel emisions= distilled water.
distilled water has had all of the minerals taken out. now, diesels do have pollutants, but far less than gasoline

Because with long tubes, the cats will be so much farther from the engine block. The cats need the heat to do their job. Without the heat, they don't do much. Hence, you'll fail the smog test.

Before my county went to obdii test I never had any problems passing a sniffer test with bbk lt's and catted h-pipe. In fact, I bought it used from the dealer like that. The place I had it inspected ever really does a visual check though.

thats how pa is too, if its '96 or newer(OBD-II) all they do is a diagnostic port check to see if there are any codes, but if youre not thorwin a CEL you wont have a problem. my buddy works for a honda dealer and had to go for his emmissions license. there was a 4 night class and he was relaying to me what he learned:
there is no visual check for OBD-II cars, so if no codes are thrown youre ok(i.e. MIL elims)
