Longtubes SUCK

Well i started to install my new 2" hooker long tubes the other day. I had to design some custom adapter plates for them to fit my heads but i just got those pieces back from the water jet the other day. I got the plates installed and started to try to get the headers in. Its like trying to stick a 6" pipe into a 2" hole..... This has to be one of the most difficult things i have done yet on this mustang. Where the firewall/floor, k-member, and bell housing all come together is such a tight spot to try and fit (4) 2" tubes through. Well after 2 full days of screwing around trying my hardest not to have to lift the motor out, we some how got it wedged through and the passenger side is in place. I will have to modify the trans cross-member because the collector is hitting it. I think the driver side should be a little bit easier, i think i might be able to go through the bottom and clear most of everything. I'm just waiting on some gaskets to arrive some summit and i should be ready to hit the track again. I also got my Dynamic Racing Mighty Mite C4 installed and its ready to go, went yesterday and picked up my new lengthen drive shaft for the new C4. Here are some pictures of the progress.

What do you think?

I plan on running the Flaming River Steering shaft. I know my BBK Shorties I had rubbed pretty bad on the stock shaft, but with the power steering you couldn't notice it much, probably not to safe :rlaugh:

Oh man, can I PLEASE pursuade you to buy the Maximum Motorsports steering shaft instead of the Flaming River unit?? With the Flaming River shaft you are betting your life on set screws and blue loc-tite to hold the thing together. Can you imagine that thing staying together next to the heat of a 410W with 2" longtubes?? The MM shaft has amazing craftsmanship and is beyond sturdy, it's even collapsable to make installing it easier, and it clears longtubes and eliminates the rag joint. Just looking out for you man, wouldn't want to see you bet that beatutiful car and your life on some loc-tite and a set screw holding your steering shaft together down the track.

fan

first thing u need to do is take that fan off and put in the trash. its been a few years but the next door guy had a old a old race car and he was jacking with the timing chevy so he had to lean over the fan to move the dist. his wife said she heard the motor rev high a few time and then she never heard it rev back up so she was thinking he was done. she said she told him dinner was done come eat. she could not see him. she a few min went by and he did not come in and the car was still running so she went out to get him. she found him died the fan had came apart and the 1 part of the blade come off and he was gone.

i doing a 427 with highport heads and i talked to kooks and they said they make headers for my combo. 1 other thing is i have a upr k member and the one part that come out the upr kit is under the cars frame. this 1 guy made a tranny crossmember for dual exhaust.

Longtubes SUCK!! X 1 million!!

I would never go through the pain and aggravation of long tubes, for just a few measly HP. Seriously, what do you gain over a decent set of short tubes? 5 HP, maybe 10 on a good day?! I would never give up the ground clearance, and engine bay room etc. for that kind of limited gains. Longtubes are yet another thing that have no real business on a street car. If you are driving it on the street AND racing it, that is another story.

Thanks for the info, i had no idea the FR shaft what so crappy. Ill deffianlty be buying the MM Shaft instead.

buy some shorties if they are that bad

I had shorties on it, but 1-5/8 shorties and a 410W dont mix well, way to small.

Yeah the fan does need to hit the trash, i haven't really been wanting to spend the money on an electric one, lol. I already modified my trans cross-member to fit around the collectors.

are you sure those are 2 inch primary's? they dont even look like 17/8

Yup im positive they are 2", i measured them and ran the product number on summit and they say 2" also.

Is that a D&D or UPR k-member? those D&D kmembers and long tubes don`t mix. I had one till this winter then bought a team Z k-member and now for the first time I get to run long tubes.

Yes this is a D&D Motorsports K-member and it sucks. I got this one because i knew it didnt move the geometry any like a lot of the others do. I got it to all fit now so its all good.

This is a race car and wont be driven on the street so ground clearance isn't really an issue. Im not sure how much HP i will pick up but i know the 1-5/8 shorties with 2.5" exhaust was choking this motor big time.

Well did some work tonight and got a good amount accomplished. I cut the old crossmember and got a good idea how im going to weld it back up to clear the collectors. I ripped out the stock steering shaft so i could put the driver side headers up through the bottom. It was so awesome they slid right in with no problems, i have to countersink my adapter plates for this side and they will be ready to go on. Im waiting for gaskets to arrive before i can bolt the headers to the plates.

I was told to use red silicone paste between the headers and the adapter plates, has anyone ever used this stuff before? Does it need to be just red silicone or high heat **** or what?

Ill have some more pics up in a few days and maybe a video of it running again.
