Looking at a 65 Fastback

I am told it isn't rusty. It has been stored indoors for about 30 years. It was last registered in the early 70's. It is supposedly stripped down and the majority of the parts are supposed to be there. There are also numerous replacement parts that the current owner has purchased over the years.

My question is where do I need to look for rust? What are the typical problem spots I need to look for? I've always been a late model man owning a 79, 85, 90, and now an 04. I just don't know alot about the early cars. Can anyone help out?

It is supposed to be an original 289 car and there is a correct numbers engine with the car. It looks like I can get it for about $2500.00. That's what the current owner has in it. He bought it about 20 years ago and bought many parts with the intent to restore it. He never got around to it.

If it isn't rusted, then that is a smokin' deal for a fastback. Check the shock towers, frame rail extensions, quarters, but most importantly the cowl. This may be easy if it is completely stripped down. If the floor is rusty at the base of the firewall, but nowhere else, then that is a good indication of a cowl in need of repair. Poor some water down it (if he will let you) and see if it makes it's way inside. Get some pics posted if you can and decode the VIN or post it for somebody else to decode for you. If it has been indoors for as long as he says, then it has barely seen the road and probably doesn't have any significant rust problems which begs the question, 'Why was it parked in the first place?'

We are discussing a time when we can get together and take a look at it. I will take pics then and see if I can get them posted.

When you say pour water, do you mean in the cowl vents? Then if it winds up inside the vehicle there is an issue?

The person who has the car is a co-worker. Apparently, it has been in his mother's garage for 15 years or so and she has made sounds about wanting it to leave. He knows he's never going to do anything with it. I have been wanting to do a resto-mod for some time. This could be it.

Yes, have someone run a hose or pour a bucket down the vents by the wipers while you watch from the inside. A cowl isn't the end of the world if the rest of the car is good and it is repairable, its just a lot of work.

It isn't going anywhere. He isn't advertising it or anything. It isn't bothering him to sit there, just his mom.

We're going to find some time in he next week to look at it. He has to clear it out. Apparently all of the loose parts are inside the chassis.

The fact that its a Fastback - 65 no less and, not to mention it has a 289!!!! Do not even bother asking him if you can do anything to the car before you buy it. These cars are becoming soooo scarce, its worth over $6000.00 in its present condition. Don't wait. Act now or you will be sorry.

I bought a car off ebay of all things; Thanksgiving 2003. $8000 sight unseen. And it actually runs, just a little bit of rust in the floor. Engine needs a rebuild, and lots of funky stuff. GREAT sheetmetal => PRICELESS!

Yeah, it's really too bad that the 2+2's have gotten so pricey. I wasn't ready to buy a car yet, but it was too good of a deal (moral: as a seller, NEVER have an auction end on a major holiday!), and I knew that it would never be cheaper.
