Looking at a 96 SVT, suggestions please...

My boss's neighbor is selling her husbands 96 SVT while he is deployed. It has about 120k miles on it, some HCI work, a few minor blemishes on the paint job, and she says it slips out of reverse every once and a while. I haven't drove it yet because two days ago I told my boss to tell her if she came down from her $7K price to $5K, I would come look at it... He called me today and said she is willing to sell for 5K... I'm not very experienced with the SVT so what are your suggestions? Is this a good deal? What should I look for when I go take a look at it?

5k Is a good price. I just paid 6 and mine has 110k on it. They are great cars. Look for ticking noise from the engine (most have it), squeaking rear control arm bushings, and check to see if it had the cooling system recall done to it. By "HCI" work what do you meen? Reverse is usually the slider gear ($40 for the part).
Shpuld be a bit faster stock than your GT is now, and alot more civilized. I just sold my 92 GT so I could buy mine.

Just test drove it.... It feels gutless... It sounds really good, but to me, it feels like it has less power than my 89 GT. But for 5k, if I got it and didn't like it I could resell it for at least 7k. Just looking around online for a 96 SVT, I haven't been able to find one for 5k. They have been at least 8k or above. So I think I'm gonna get it and play with it for a while and see what I think. Wasn't able to put it to the test I wanted to cause the owner was having a heart attack when I got above the speed limit. But whatever, we will see what it is really about when I bring it home sometime this week....

Thanks for your input!!

Their power band is way hihger than a 5.0 After 5k they are amazing, but they really dont make alot of power until after 3400 rpm when the short runners open up. I tell you when I put on my O/R H-pipe and the silencer on the intake the car really opened up. Also change the gears to 3.73 or 4.10, I have 3.73's and that made a HUGE difference. Hope you get it, if not let me know b/c I would buy it in a second.

Yeah, I'll let you know. Like I said though, she wouldn't really let me get in it to see what its really about... She claims that it already has 373 gears.... So we shall see!!!

If I don't wind up getting it for some reason, I'll be sure to let you know and give you her contact information.

That is a very decent price..... got mine for 5k with 130k miles.... It has a lot done to it though...

I have 4.30s in the rear. If you want some get up in these cars and be able to keep it streetable, a 4.30 is a perfect gear for cobras. Put some of these in and you will have to surgically remove the goofy grin you will have.

Well, bad news from my financial adviser.... He thinks that I should wait a while longer before purchasing another Stang. With all my goals for the winter time with the GT, I would really limit what all I can do if I bought another one at this time. So, I have decided to not buy it :( But, good news for some of you that are interested. She is putting it back on the market but is still asking 7k. Now, if I talked her down (as a complete stranger to her), I see no reason why someone else couldn't either. But she is asking 7k OBO. Her number is 808-783-0811. I forget her name but as I see it, for that price who cares what her name is... lol.. Anyways, if anyone is interested, give her a call. She is located on Fort Lewis. If you have problems or need assistance getting on post, just give me a call and I'll lend a hand getting you through the gate. My # is 253-301-0931. Let me know if anyone buys it.
